한국의 문신 문화가 드디어 ‘티핑포인트‘가 다가온 것같네요. 요즘에 많은 패션 리더 애들이 자기 문신을 자랑스럽게 보여주는 거고 이젠 연예인들도 이 유행을 타고 있어요. 스포츠한국의 기사를 읽어보니까 진짜 그런 것같네요.

Tattoos seem to have reached the “tipping point” in Korea, and have mainstreamed enough to become acceptable. Lots more kids are sporting them, more of them are real and not temporary tats (although those are also really popular), and now stars are proudly showing off their ink. Greetings, from a She-who-lives in the land of eccentric desires and curious cravings — my name is Jeong Senan-seul. My name means “one born with sagacity.” It seems Indian, no? But let’s just have you call me Senan, since that name is far too long. I’m a 28-year-old woman possessed of both “strangeness and desire” (and everything in between!), raising a snake on my thigh with a woman warrior living on my back. (I’m talking about the tattoos, of course.)

내가 생각하는 옷 입기, 패션이란 너무 위태로운거야. 때때로 불온하고 또 때때로 불안한 것. 가끔씩은 벗기 위해 옷을 입고, 또 옷 입기 하나만을 위해 옷 입기도 하지. 하지만 많은 시간 나는 아주 게으르고 상투적이기도 하고. 그러나 타투는 나에게 있어서 궁극의 패션.(진부한가?)

What I think about wearing clothes or so-called fashion is that its gotta be very risky. It should be at times, disquieting; at times, uncomfortable. Sometimes I wear clothes to take them off, or to wear something singularly special. But a lot of the time, I’m lazy and my clothes are trite and conventional. Still, my tattoos define my true and ultimate “fashion.” (Or is this trite, too?)

타투를 하던 당시의 내 마음과 정체성의 문제야. 타투의 퀄리티를 떠나서 내가 선택한 도안과 의미는 언제나 마음의 문제. 다른 사람의 마음에 들려고 애쓰기 보다, 나는 내 마음에 꼭 드는 사람이 되고 싶어. 절박하고도 재밌는 내 인생의 이슈.

When I got tattooed, my mind and identity were troubled. Without talking about the quality of the tattoo itself, the design and its meaning that I chose is always a function of my mind. Rather than being pressured by others and constantly worried about what they are thinking, I want to become someone I myself like. This is an issue that is constantly growing more acute for me.

5-30얼마전부터 회사원이 되었다. 나 같은 녀석을 받아주다니 놀라운 회사! (하지만 언제 잘릴지 모른다) 나름대로 진보적인 회사 분위기.

Not too long ago, I became an office worker. I was surprised that a company would take someone like me! (Still, they might fire me yet!) Needless to say, my company has a pretty progressive vibe.

바(bar)가 있어서 나의 환타지를 실현해 보려 올라갔는데 천장이 너무 낮아서 기어다니지 못했다. 코요태 어글리에서처럼 한번 섹시하게 기어보려는 꿈 무산.

Because there’s a bar here, I decided to live out one of my fantasies by going up on it, but because the ceiling was too low, I couldn’t crawl around. My dream of crawling around like in “Coyote Ugly” have been forever vanquished.

일본에서 구입한 원피스에 이태원에서 산 황금색 부츠 사람들이 전부 코스프레 하냐고 놀렸지만, 맞다. 코스프레. 대신, 주인공은 나의 알터에고(alter ego),그녀를 온몸으로 체험하고 있어. 나만의 롤 플레잉 (role playing)

When people look at the dress I bought in Japan and the gold boots I picked up in Itaewon, everyone always teases me by asking if I’m doing cosplay (”costume play”). Yeah, that’s it. Exactly. So I guess the main character is my alter ego having an adventure with my body. I guess that means I’m just role playing. All by myself. Right.

오늘의 주제는 푸쉬업 브라. 볼륨 업이고 뭐건간에 왠지 갑갑하단 느낌 때문에 불편했다. 왠지 살쪄보이는 것 같기도 하고. 이런땐 정말 의문이 든다.’얼마나 말라야 마른거지?’

Today’s topic is the push-up bra. It increases volume but because it also gives a pinched-in feeling, it was uncomfortable. It also kinda makes you look like you’ve gained weight. It’s times like this that I begin to have doubt.How skinny do you have to get to be thought of as skinny?

Do I really want to become a “skinny bitch?” Why is it so hard for women to love themselves as they are? People who end up skinny that way do so because of women’s magazines and the mass media. In the end, being healthy is beautiful, right?

남자친구랑 술 마시러 간 날.

The day I went out drinking with my boyfriend.

너무 타투를 노골적으로 쳐다보는 사람 때문에 싸움 날 뻔 했다. 동물원 동물 쳐다보듯이 쳐다보니까 기분 나빴지. 근데 동물은 맞지.

We almost fought because so many people were openly staring at my tattoo. It was hurtful because they were staring at me like an animal at the zoo. But I guess that makes sense.

뱀이니까. 하하.

Because it’s a snake. Hehe.

웃어 넘기는 여유. 모든 것들은 내 선택이었으니까 결과도 받아들여야지. 어서 다양한 문화를 받아들이는 한국이 되어야 나도 편히 사는데…

That’s the reason I just have to laugh. Because this is all my choice, I have to accept the consequences. When Korea can finally accept diversity in the culture, I can live a comfortable life.

남자친구 가슴의 타투 도안은 내가 그린 것. 역시 도안의 참신함이나 완성도보단 의미를 더 중요하게 여긴다. 못 그렸단 말은 아님.;;; 자기 정당화인가? 타투 도안 그리기는 어려워. 핫팬츠가 너무 짧아. 뭐 약간 민망하지만. 이것도 내 선택.ㅎ

I designed the tattoo on my boyfriend’s chest. The meaning is definitely more important than the novelty or perfection of the design. I’m not saying it wasn’t drawn well — or is this a rationalization? It is hard to draw a tattoo. And my hot pants are too short. Even though I’m a little embarrassed by this, it IS my choice.

회사에서 촛불 시위 나간다고해서 신은 운동화 2003년에 밑창부분의 망사 때문에 샀다가 잘 신지도 않았다. 운동화면서 왜 구두 신은거 보다 발이 아픈거냐!

Day of the beef demonstrations.
Because everyone in the office was planning to go to the beef protests, I brought the sneakers I bought back in 2003. But because the bottoms got messed up, I didn’t wear them often. Ironic that wearing these sneakers was more painful than heels!

티셔츠는 촛불 시위에 맞는 문구가 들어갔지. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SHUT THE FUCK UP! DOWN WITH M.B야 요즘.. 경찰에게 잡혀가지 않도록 큰 뱅글을 찼다.(방어 무기로서) 플라스틱 STUD가 박힌. 근데 완전 평화시위여서 아무 일 없었음.

I wore a t-shirt with a message that seemed apropos for the demonstration: “Please feel free to shut the fuck up!” Everything’s about “Down with Lee Myung Bak” these days. I wore big bangles so as not to be able to be arrested by the police (defensive weapons) — earrings with plastic studs. But because the demonstration was peaceful, nothing happened.

워커힐.워커힐 파티에 간 날 내 방 살짝 공개. 눈화장에 전력을 기울였으나 파티가서 다 지워짐. 드레스 코드는 블루… 그래서 파란색 브래지어를 선택했지. 나머지는 전부 금색과 살색.

Walker Hill.Here’s a public shot of my room the day I went to the Walker Hill party. Even though I spent all my energy on getting my eye makeup right, it would just came off at the party. The dress code was blue…so I wore a blue bra. Everything else was gold and skin tones.

This is a shot together with my book art and jewelry designer friends. They wanted to do “corpse play” (a Korean kids game in which one lies completely still, like a corpse, for as long as possible, similar to American “staring contests” –FMS) so we did it right there, on the spot.

A drunken but refreshing day.
Although it wasn’t my intention at all, I was picked as “best dancer.” I was somewhat embarrassed. (I’m sure people were all thinking to themselves, “WHAT?!?!”)

참! 얼마전에 랩댄서가 신을 법한 구두를 샀다. 얼른 신고 또 나만의 알터에고 창조 놀이를 해야지. 위태로운 상상의 여지를 만들면서 즐기는 것도 패션이잖아.

Right! Not too long ago, I bought some shoes most likely made for lap dancers. I have to hurry up and make a good reason to wear them for play as my alter ego. Fashion is also about making room for and enjoying dangerous imaginings.

“더 짧게 더 아찔하게 쇼트 반바지에 쏙 반하다”고 아시아경제에서 나왔네요. 출근할 때 핫팬츠?! 동감? 한국은 진짜 특이하네요. ㅋㅋㅋ 하야튼 요즘에 한국여자들이 쇼트 반바지에 쑥 반한한 거네요.

This article, entitled “Getting More Giddy over Shorter Pants,” and published in the Asian Economic Daily (Korean), even tells us that short pants can be good for workwear, too. Do you think so? Or isn’t this cutting things a bit short? Whatever the case, short pants and hot pants in all forms are indeed abound on the streets of Seoul.

올 해 여태까지 서울에서 가장 큰 파티 중 두 개가 열렸는데 무지 재미났었어요. 하나는 워커힐에 있는 서울에서 가장 근사하다고 할 수 있는 클럽으로 미국에서 제일 유명한 DJ 스티브 아오키를 모셔왔고, 또 다른 파티는 세계적으로 좀 놀아주시고 알아주시는 DJ들을 모셔온 거였죠. 특히나 두번째 파티는 위에 사진도 있는 제 2회 세계 디제이 페스티벌이었는데 난지도 캠프장에서 큰 야외 공연을 주말 내내 한 파티였어요. 렛츠 고 파뤼 파뤼~유후! 둘 다 무진장 신났고 이제 서울에서도 국제적으로 놀 수 있는 파티 문화가 생겼다는 증거이겠죠. 서울의 클럽과 파티 문화에서 2008년은 아마 대막의 서곡을 여는 해로 기억될 것입니다.

Two of Seoul’s biggest parties ever have yielded some of the most fun ever. One brought one of America’s most famous DJ’s, Steve Aoki, to one of Seoul’s classiest venues at the Walker Hill Hotel, while the other brought famous DJ’s from around the world to a huge outdoor performance that lasted an entire weekend, at the 2nd World DJ Festival, held at the Nanjido campgrounds. Either way, they turned out to be a lot of fun, and marked the beginning of a more international party scene in Seoul. For the club and party scene, 2008 is turning out to be a banner year.

하지만 두 번째로 열린 세계 디제이 페스티벌의 야외 환경은 특이한 의상과 캠핑과 어우러져 확연히 다른 파티를 만들었어요.

But the outdoors environment of the 2nd World DJ Festival, combined with costumes and camping, made for a totally different kind of party.

무대 근처에서의 풍경은 어느 다른 콘서트장에서나와 다를 바 없었어요.

Near the stage, the scene isn’t too different from any other concert venue.

하지만 무대 저 멀리에는 무수히 많은 일들이 벌어지고 있었습니다. 합법적인 무료 문신 해보실래요? 여기는 제 친구 중 한명인데 무료 문신 텐트에서 목 되에 “파티마의 눈” 문신을 새기고 있었어요. 한국에서 대부분의 문신은 의사에게 시술되었을 때에만 합법이에요. 그래서 문신은 어쨌든 많이 하지만 보통 불법으로 시술되지요. 이 페스티벌에서는 하지만 합법적인 무료 문신을 할 수 있었어요 - 날마다 오지 않는 기회죠! 그래서인지 기다리는 줄이 매우 길었답니다.

But away from the stage, there are so many other things going on. How about free, legal tattoos? Here’s a friend of mine getting the “Eye of Fatima” tattooed on the back of her neck in a free tattoo tent. Most tattooing is still only legal in Korea if done by a medical doctor. Hence, tattooing, while still done, is done so illegally. This was one of the few chances to get a free, legal tat. There was a long line.

우리는 무대에서 내려가서 문 밖에서 조금 피곤에 지친 듯한 패셔니스타를 만날 수 있었어요.

We catch a few fatigued fashionistas on the way off the floor and out the door.

이 의상은 조금 더 찬찬히 봐야 할 필요가 있겠어요. 저 찰리채플린 모자, 재킷, 벨트 그리고 골드 라메로 만든 핫팬츠…이 패션 뭐지? 또 저 금색 샌달까지 신었네요. 아무튼 멋쟁이야.

These outfits deserve a closer look. That bowler, jacket, belt, and gold lamé hot pants…say whuuuut? She’s also got the gold sandals. Awesome.

20년대 신여성 스타일의 부활인가 - 그물 스타킹과 요목조목 찬 팔찌가 합쳐졌네요.

That revival of “flapper” gets mixed with fishnets and other assorted bangles.

네, 이제는 집으로 돌아갈 시간입니다. 골드 라메 입었던 아가씨는 센스 있게 여분 신발을 챙겨왔네요. 저 금색 신발은 예쁘기는 하지만, 확실히 편하게 걸으라고 만든 구두는 아니죠.

Yes, it’s time to call it a night. Ms. Gold Lamé was smart to bring a pair of backups. These shoes are beautiful, but they certainly weren’t made for walking.

하지만 2박 3일 DJ 페스티벌에서 파티는 끝날 줄을 모릅니다. 사람들은 야영을 하고 아직 파티를 떠날 수가 없어요. 야외라서 그런지 패션 스타일은 좀 더 캐주얼하고 편안했어요. 그리고 한복을 입었으면 입장이 공짜라서 한복 스타일이 또한 아주 신기하게 디제이 파티와 함께 잘 섞여있었습니다.

But the party never ends over at the 3-day DJ Festival, where people were camped out and not ready to go. Since it was outside, the styles were a bit more casual and comfortable. And since you also got in for free if you wore a hanbok, that was interestingly remixed as well.

파티장 들어가자마자 번쩍이는 네온과 메탈릭 사운드가 여기저기 들려왔어요.

또한 그녀의 미니드레스가 너무 좋았어요 - 금색 웻지 슈즈랑 어울려서 말이죠. 나라면 좀 더 발은 색의 스타킹을 신었을 것 같긴 하지만, 어쨌든 전체적인 조화는 마음에 들었습니다.

I also loved her minidress and working the gold wedges. I might’ve gone with lighter stockings, but I did like the look.

무대 가까이에서는 사람들은 각자 구역에서 캠프하고 있었고 춤추면서 그렇게 밤을 지새우고 있었습니다.

Closer to the stage, people are camped out on their own areas, dancing the night away.

파티장 문 왼쪽에서 그들은 저 펑키 안경을 나눠주고 있었어요, 그렇게 생각할래요…

They were giving out those funky glasses on the left at the gate, I believe…

요즘에 펑키 선글라스가 무진장 중요하잖아요 알다시피. 밤에 선글라스 끼는건 스타일을 위해서 필수!

These days, funky sunglasses are of extreme importance, as you know. Wearing one’s sunglasses at night must be done with style.

그래서 매우 패션이 앞서가는 이 여자분은 굳이 스타일을 매치할 필요조차 없어요. 그리고 우리는 그게 마음에 들어요. 하지만 그녀의 어울리지 않은 두가지 색깔 스타킹이 봤을 때 굉장히 잘 먹히는 것 같아요 - 별로 튀지 않고 네온의 밝은 그림자와 어우러져서 말이죠. 정말 좋은 패션 센스에요.

And she so fashion-forward, she don’t even have to match. And we like that. But even her “mismatched” two-tone is done really well, in terms of them being equally muted and lighter shades of neon. They worked well.

우리 전에 이 여자분들 만났는데 여기 더 좋은 샷이 있네요. 그리고 강북에서 온 좀 더 편안한 패션 스타일이군요.

We met these ladies before, but here’s a clearer shot, and little more laid-back fashion from north of the river…

파티가 자정을 넘어 새벽으로 넘어가면서 여기 또한 에너지 레벨이 점점 낮아지고 있군요. 그녀는 조금 피곤해 보여서 일어나서 포즈해달라고 하기가 싫었어요. 그런데도 지금 앉은 포즈도 그대로 매우 재밌어요.

Here also, energy levels dipped as the party went into the wee hours of the morning. She looked so tired, I didn’t want to ask her to stand up. Her pose was interesting as it was.

이 커플도 전에 만난 적 있는데, 하지만 이 샷에서는 아니고, “아메리칸 고딕” 패션을 연상시키는 사진에서 만났었어요.

We’ve also met this couple before, but not in this shot, where they reminded me of “American Gothic.”

노랑색 티셔츠의 노랑색 가디건, 노랑색 가방으로 원색스타일을 입고 산뜻한 내 마음처럼 화사한 노랑!!

Going clothes shopping with friends in Shinchon was the plan today.

I wore a yellow tee with a yellow cardigan, along with a yellow bag. A splendid yellow from top to bottom was the look, which matched my vibrant mood.

I was a bit sad to go to the wedding of one of my closest friends…

결혼식이 끝난뒤 옷을 갈아입고 우울한 내 마음을 달래줄 내가 좋아하는 갈색 남방을 입고 친구들을 만났다.

After the wedding, I decided to lift my mood a bit by changing into one of my favorite short-length shirts before going off to meet my friends.

길이가 짧은 갈색 남방을 입을때는 배의 힘을 꽉 줘야된다는거!ㅋ

But the thing is that you have to really suck it in when wearing it. Hmmmph…

요즘 홍대 거리를 다니면서 이전에 알던 언더그라운드 클럽과 트렌디한 바들뿐만 아니라 정말 독특하고 예술적인 감각이 살아있는 것들이 많다는 새로운 감흥을 갖게 되었어요. 다양한 스타일과 볼 것들이 즐비하다는 점에서 홍대는 명실상부 한국 패션의 중심이 되었죠. 예를 들어 지하철역 입구 앞에서 클래식한 정장과 진주귀걸이를 걸치고 남자친구를 기다리고 있는 젊은 여성들과 파티갈 준비를 하고 화려하게 차려입은 클러버들을 한 곳에서 볼 수 있어요. 뿐만 아니라 길거리를 누비고 다니는 젊은 펑크족 무리들도 볼 수 있죠. 미국물을 잔뜩 머금고 있는 압구정이나 대학생들 중심의 신촌이나 서울의 다른 어느 곳보다도 홍대는 그 어떤것이라도 받아들이는 패션의 중심가라고 할 수 있어요.

Recent trips through Hongdae have given me a new appreciation for its appeal as something more than formerly “underground” clubs, trendy bars, as well as some truly unique and artistic offerings. Hongdae is also one of the true centers of Korean fashion, in terms of the sheer variety of styles visible there: one can see young women in formal dresses and pearls waiting for their boyfriends near the subway exit, club kids showing skin and ready to party, or a costumed crew of punks stalking the streets, ready to be seen…More than America-influenced Apkujeong, student-dominated Shinchon, the Koreanized and femme fashions of Myeongdong, or nearly any other area of Seoul, Hongdae is a sartorial petri dish in which anything and everything comes together.

제가 Korean Herald 기사에서 언급하는 것들 중에 ‘밝은 색상 트렌드’가 이미 현존하는 ‘미래지향적 메탈릭 트렌드’와 융합되고 있다는 게 있어요. 이것의 가장 좋은 예는 (Herald에 나온) 이 사진이에요.

One of the things I mention in my Korea Herald article is how the bright colors trend is mixing with the already-present “futurism” trends of shiny metallics. One of the best examples of this (which the Herald covered up! Ack!) is in this picture.

미국의 정의 부대가 색깔로 분류되고 있군요. 그런데 생각해보면, 캐릭터들이 좀 촌스러운 것 같네요. 슈퍼맨은 당연히 80년대고 – 최근 리메이크에 색깔을 좀 죽인 걸로 봐도… 배트맨 조차도 더 어둡고 – 회색이 아니죠. 여기 빨간색 하얀색과 파란색의 또 다른 조합이에요.

The Justice League of America gets color coordinated. Thinking about it, though, the characters are pretty gaudy. Superman is so definitely 80’s — notice they toned down and muted the colors for the recent remake. Even Batman is darker — no gray. Here’s another variation on red, white, and blue.

아마 보면 알 수 있듯이, 아쿠아 블루와 화이트가 요새 대세에요. 그녀의 의식적인 여성적 스타일로 미루어 봤을 때 여기선 분홍색이 딱 맞군요. 여기 블루앤화이트가 더 있어요. 그녀는 칵테일 드레스와 스웨터를 신기하게 잘 소화하는군요.

As you can probably tell, aqua blue and white are all the rage these days. The pink makes sense, given her self-consciously femmed-out sense of style. Here’s some more blue and white, and she does an interesting job with a cocktail dress and sweater.

분홍색 하이탑 Reebok 신발! 아직도 나오나요? Reebok 신발은 정말 돌아왔어요, 적어도 이 트렌드를 해석해보자면요. 사실은 이 똑같은 멤버와 몇 주 전에 만났어요. 그때도 핑크가 주요 포인트였어요, 지금과는 매우 다른 모드였지만 말이에요. 저는 이 사진이 마음에 들어요 왜냐면 개성있는 사람이 많은 홍대의 느낌을 잘 살리고 있기 때문이죠.

Pink hightop Reeboks! Do they even make those anymore? Reeboks are definitely back, at least in this sub-trends’s interpretation. Actually, I ran into the same crew a couple weeks earlier, and pink was still a major point, even though they were in a very different mode. I really like this shot a lot, since it captures he feel of Hongdae as much as the interesting people in it.
