그럼 한국 여자모델들이 도대체 왜 카우보이 모자와 썬글래스를 쓰고 있을까? 그 건 보통 링지레이나 비키니랑 쓰는 액세서리인가? 아님 그냥 창피해서 (“결혼 못하게 되면 어떡해?!”) 얼굴을 숨기면서 나와야 되는 건가? 한국이다첫째 사진에서 백인 여자 모델은 자랑스럽게 옷을 보여주고 있는데 진짜 촌스럽게 역시 한국여자 2명은 숨어있는 거네. 봐봐. 1명은 앞모습을 안보여주면서 고개를 숙이고 있고 딴 한국 여자는 옆남자뒤에 있는 거야. 혹시 이런 패션쇼를 본 적이있나요? 창피해서 런웨이에 걸어오면서 옷때문에 자기 얼굴을 못노출하는 모델? 말이 돼!? Levi’s의 새로운 몸짱 랑지레에 런칭 이런바 ‘패션쇼’를 하면서 모델들이 창피하게 나오는 것 — 한국은 아직도 이 만큼 촌스러운 건가 아님 낮은 수준 값이 싼 도우미를 고용한 건가? Levi’s — 내 생각엔 다음에 진짜 모델이나 좀 쓰세요. 시간당 15,000원 몸짱도아닌 도움이 쓰면 티가 나. 진짜 촌스러워. 짜증나, 정말.

So why are the two Korean models wearing stupid leather cowboy hats and sunglasses, like they’re going to rob a convenience store? Is there an Indiana Jones and bikini trend coming? They’re obviously embarrassed about being in the show — “Oh my, God! What if I can’t get married!?” — one of the two Korean  “models” won’t show her front and is hiding her face, while the other one is hiding behind the dude next to her. Yet the foreign model is doing her job just fine. But come on –  have you ever seen a fashion show in which the model is embarrassed to show her face while wearing the clothes? What a joke. Levi’s — next time you put on a show, hire some REAL models to show the clothes, instead of cheap 15,000-per-hour promotion girls from the countryside who are too afraid to show their faces while wearing the clothes you want to promote. Duh.

Google has restored our site to “clean” status. Yay! Reminds me of that scene from “Poltergeist.” Brings back memories, doesn’t it? Wait for the last line…

분명히, 한국 것이 훨씬 더 쓸만하다. 우리의 꾸준한 독자들은 검은 고양이와  이나영 파리바게트 광고(크리스마스 케익을 사면 웃기면서 귀여운 곰모자를 준다는) 게시물들이 작년에 올려진 오래된 것이란 것을 알았을 것이다.

Clearly, the Korean version is much more ready-to-wear. Our longtime readers will recognize these posts are old ones from last year, with the black cat and the post about the craze started by Lee Na Young’s commercial for Paris Baguette, which gave out these ludicrously cute bear hats with a purchase of a Christmas cake.

OK. The last part was kind of a lie. But only kind of. Many ripoffs of the Paris Baguette bear hat resulted, and animal hat-craziness was born. And it was everywhere.

Mixed with the continued desire for thick knits and the general acceptance of wearing really cute, fuzzy things, the animal hat trend will remain, especially on super-cold days when they can be partially rationalized — because they’re pretty darn warm. Expect the animal hat madness to continue as a normal thing in Korea, sort of like couple t-shirts, which is another thing that will simply never die, and exists according to its own, uniquely Korean logic.

It was really funny to see this in Hongdae. You’ve seen the “Free Hugs” video campaign, right?

이 것 나오고 한국의 버전도 생겼어요. 원래 잘 안 안아주는 한국인들도 하니까 나름대로 다른 식으로 감동적이죠?

After that video, Korea got one of its own. And watching a people not really used to hugging or public displays of affection giving it out freely in the street was moving in its own way, I must say.

한국에서는 너무 따라하는 걸 누구나 아는 거잖아요. 그래서 이 순수한 캠페인이 한국에 오고 상업화가 됐을 때는 좀 실망스러웠어요. 길거리에서 무슨 도우미들이 “Free Hugs”를 주는 것. 너무 성적인 느낌이 있는 거니까. 아니면 CGV에서 무슨 홍보 캠페인을 하면서 “Free Hugs”이라고 기계적으로 인쇠된 간판을 들고 다니면서 하는 것도 봤어요. 사무실 직원의 유니폼을 입으면서. 그 사람들한테 가는 사람들이 한명도 못 봤더라고요. 너무 어색해서.

Everyone knows that people copy each other quite a bit here in Korea. So I was pretty disappointed to see this come to Korea and become commercialized. When you have scantily-clad “narrator-models” giving out “Free Hugs” to mostly old men who really, really enjoyed them, the sexual vibe just didn’t seem cool. Or the CGV employees I saw holding up neatly-printed “Free Hugs” signs in the lobby of theaters for their own advertising. I never saw anyone actually go up to get one, thank goodness. It was just too awkward and fake. Corporate suits sure know how to ruin a pure-hearted idea.

근데 어색해도 중학생들이 열정적으로 하는 걸 보고 기분에 좋았네요.

But despite the inherent awkwardness, seeing these middle school kids giving it a shot sure warmed the heart.

귀엽죠? 완전한 “Free Hugs 부대”잖아요. ㅋㅋㅋ 근데 위험성을 하나도 안 느꼈죠. 따뜻한 의도만 느껴진 거죠. 그런 군대가 있었으면 좋겠죠? 그런 군대를 어디로나 보파견하고 싶네요.

For the first time, our site has solidly surpassed the 10,000+ monthly unique visitors mark, or 40,000+ page views (hits) per month. Our podcast’s XML file (the main address) was accessed 5,500 times last month, and we are not even updating it regularly. Now is the time to add better and more regular Korean content to the site and really move things into second gear, to bring in more Korean visitors and get the word about our site here in Korea, where we are actually based. We are working hard to get a solid Korean columnist or two, as well as a VJ with charm and wit. We hope that you will work hard to help us find good people, and to spread the word about the site. After asking them what it was all about, apparently, they are mostly Yonsei and Ewha University students doing a marketing exercise for school for a new ice cream called Cledor. It was pretty tasty, actually.
