OK – I loved the idea that Paris Hilton came to Korea. I love the fact that she gave some money to charity and just generally looked great while being here. I also love the fact that she came and was given a stunning hanbok (Korean traditional dress) to wear, which is such a symbol of Korean pride and pretty darn cool that the pinnacle of glitz, glamour, and gossip was getting in traditional carriages, posing in front of palaces, and eating bibimpap at the same time.

오오, 패리스 힐튼이 한국에 왔어요! 한국에 온것도, 돈도 기부한 것도 여기 와서는 매우 멋지게 보였다는 것도 매우 좋아요. 그리고 와서 우리나라 상징인 색고운 한복 입었다는 것도 무지무지 좋아요! 한복 입고 가마도 타고 옛스러운 궁 앞에서 포즈도 취하고 비빔밥도 먹고 정말 패리스 힐튼과 우리나라 전통 상징들이 다같이 잘 어울렸던 것 같아요.

So why on God's green earth is there not a single frickin' picture of Paris in that hanbok, one where we can actually see it, from the Korean press corps? Given that the very symbol of Korean culture was draped upon the very symbol of western glam – that symbolism wasn't lost on anyone – the entire Korean press corp can't get her to post for one stinkin' full shot of her in that hanbok? What the hell?

As a photographer, I'm flabbergasted. At a loss for words. Pissed. Ready to chew nails. Heck, I might even go and do something drastic in a fit of rage and hurt myself, like buying a Wonder Girls album and actually listening to it. Arrrrrgh!

MyDaily got her in a gorgeous outfit that was a work of art, but cut off the shoes. Doh! Duh. Then comes the hanbok shot. Another MyDaily article asks the question, "Doesn't it look good on me?" Well, I don't know! I can't see it! Duh.

마이데일리에서 예쁜 사진 하나 찍었는데 발이 잘렸어요. 저런!-_- 이번엔 한복 버전이에요. 또다른 마이델리 기사에서는 "나한테 잘어울려요?" 하고 써놨는데, 글쎄…전혀 모르겠는데요!!!

ISplus pulls off a shot that's better and got passed around a lot (it's a nice moment), but I still can't see that darn hanbok. Wasn't there a "photo time"? She didn't pose for all the cameras after strolling around in it? Grrrrrr.

Then we get a nice "small-girl-in-the-big-city" shot (from MyDaily again) that actually is cool because it's a "big-girl-in-the-traditional-palace" shot. It's cool. But kind of unsatisfying. Paris Hilton is a fashion icon come to Korea – we don't have better shots than this? It's OK…but didn't the photographer learn anything in How To Use a Camera 101 – don't crop her just before the hem of her dress! At least crop at the bottom of the dress (wouldn't have lost very much of the tops of roofs), or in the mid-thigh. Under the clothes, or above the joints – THAT'S where you crop! Aaaaaaaaaaagh!

The only people (ahem) who seemed to have shots of the dress was People magazine – a foreign media outlet! And they seemed to have the only interesting shots – why didn't these show up around the Korean Internet? If they did, I sure spent a lot of time on Naver and Daum and Newsen and countless other press outlets. Love these pics, by the way – and I finally got to see the full hanbokked Paris – in People! Apparently, the Korean press made a big deal out of the foreign press making a big deal out of Paris in Seoul. You know what I mean, right?

But then, what can you expect from underpaid tabloid newspaper photographers, anyway? Well, cheap upskirt shots, apparently. Thanks, Newsen. Ya know, we've all seen Paris bukket nekkit, and in some pretty good video detail; so can you spare us the attempts to get a picture of Paris's crotch? The Seoul Shinmun reports on a story from The New York Times, which focused on the sudden lack of black models on the runways of high fashion, except for one biracial Black-Korean woman:

Although black women in the United States spend more than $20 billion on apparel each year, according to estimates by TargetMarketNews.com, it was hard to discern an awareness of this fact on the part of designers showing in New York, where black faces were more absent from runways than they have been in years.

Of the 101 shows and presentations posted on Style.com during the New York runway season, which ended a month ago, more than a third employed no black models, according to Women’s Wear Daily. Most of the others used just one or two. When the fashion caravan moved to London, Paris and Milan, the most influential shows — from Prada to Jil Sander to Balenciaga to Chloé and Chanel — made it appear as if someone had hung out a sign reading: No Blacks Need Apply.

According to the styles coming down across the Milano runways last month, it seems that time is indeed moving forward, from the 20's and 60's that are the woman-positive "flapper" and "mod" fashions recently, to the 70's, when hippy looks and funky hooks were all the rage. From JOINS:

Looking good, right? Korean stars these days are on the move and apparently more interested in international fashion, since now they sort of have to be. Gone are the days of around 15 years ago when everyday Koreans just copied what Korean stars were wearing; nowadays, with the Internet, Korean netizens are getting design and everyday fashion ideas direct from around the world.

Since what's ready-to-wear in London, Milan, New York, and Paris doesn't take 2-3 years to reach Korea anymore, nor is it filtered so strongly by Korean designers adapting and homogenizing the looks, what's hot overseas is much more important these days. And Korean stars seem to be trying hard to not only keep up, but LOOK LIKE they're keeping up to their fan base at home.

These days, fashion that responds to the long days of the rainy season, as well as just more rain in general, seem to be finally taking hold. According to Chosun.com:

Of course, none of this is really that much news to some Americans in big cities, since such rain gear has been around for a while, which we reported on even here some time ago, before you were really able to see any cute rubber rain boots in Seoul, or many people sporting fancy designer umbrellas.

But a few more Korean women are foregoing the questionable (and kinda gross, in my opinion) practice of purposefully wearing dress or summer sandals and just resigning oneself to get wet, then coming in and (hopefully) washing one's feet at the office or other final destination.

I thought that it might be some kind of wonderful to not ruin one's shoes and skin (and these days, expensive pedicures!) with nonsense behavior like that. Seems that more and more women in Seoul are thinking the same way.

This is somewhat surprising, since not only is the dress not actually more revealing than many shoulder-less designs presently in play on Korean stars, but is something straight off a runway, done by a respected and talented Western designer. This is controversial?

At least So-yeon is only displaying her secondary sex characteristics, as opposed to her primary ones.

솔직히 누가 더 노출이 심한가요? 보통 일반적인 미국인의 경우 하체를 노출하는게 더 심하다고 생각하죠. 나도 그렇게 생각해요. 한국인들은 상체를 노출하는 것에 더 많이 신경을 쓰는 거구요, 한국처럼 추운 겨울에도 미니스커트를 입는 나라는 사실 거의 없어요. ㅋㅋㅋ

Seriously – is this really risqué? Maybe I'm just looking at it from an American perspective, which I think tends to be more conservative when it comes to showing leg than in Korea. And in Korea, people tend to worry about exposing the upper body a lot, such as with exposed shoulders, which could get you in trouble as recently as 5-7 years ago, or having a pierced belly button, which only "bad girls" did as recently as circa 2003, but now is par for the course.

Perhaps it's no surprise that Korea seems to be the only country I know of in which it's nearly as common to see miniskirts in the deepest cold of winter as it is in the summer. In a fashion culture that actually has fur-lined panties for keeping warm for miniskirt wear in the winter, is a slightly exposed midriff (not even to the belly button!) and vertically-exposed boobies – instead of across the top – really that shocking?

Uh-oh – looks like some controversy has been brewing, but in an interesting way:

What the controversy's all about it not so much the show itself, but the social conversation that's been going on about the "bean paste stew girl", which is a literal translation of the Korean term '된장녀.' The idea is that there are certain women who would rather spend 3,000 won (a bit less than $3 American dollars) on a cheap cafeteria meal of bean paste stew all month long, living pretty minimally and frugally at home, and otherwise saving her money, but then buying an $800 Louis Vuitton purse.

What's interesting in this image is the fact that the woman isn't jobless or mooching off of others usually, but rather the criticism seems to lie in her apparently warped priorities, her vanity, her lack of a clear idea of what's "really important." Even the term itself is a point of controversy, as many women think of it as extremely sexist that such a word is being used as a kind of social disciplining, pointing at certain behavior or certain girls as "bad."

On the one hand, you have a woman making money, enjoying sexual freedom, being finicky about her dating partners, buying her own stuff. It's Destiny Child's "Independent Woman" all rolled up in a term. On the other, however, is an image that seems to frighten many men here, especially in a society that has always kept women tied to very strict and limited social roles, and sexual freedom, unapologetic consumerism, and being a woman who doesn't have to depend on a man is a scary prospect in Korea. 진짜 재밌네요. 한국에서는 이런바 '된장녀'자체는 문제 아니라 이 개념이 존재할 수 있는 가능성은 재밌죠. 오랫동안에 여성들이 사실 한국에서 아주 엄격한 사회적 역할의 규칙들을 지켜야 했는데 이젠 경제적인 독립 때문에 더이상 남자를 꼭 필요하는 것도아니고 자기 돈을 벌고 있고 더욱더 아마 한국남자들이 싫어하는 건: 성적인 자유를 이젠 즐겁게 느낄 수 있는 가능성이 있는 거예요.

사실 미국의 70/80년대는 비슷했어요. 많은 한국사람들의 생각보다는 미국문화는 아주 보수적인 거예요. 미국처럼 술을 불법하게 만든 나라가 어딨어요, 이슬람교 나라빼고? 그리고 거의 모든 주에서는 그런 역사 때문에 일요일에 술을 못 사고 그리고 지금도 어디서나 새벽 2시이후에 술을 못 팔아요.

근데 70년대부터 미국의 경제가 약해졌고 그리고 인플레이션때문에 전에처럼 여자가 집에서만 있고 남자는 밖에 일하고 - 그 현실이 지난 일이 된 거예요. 결혼하면 꼭 여자도 일해야 되게 됐어요. 50년대는 남편이 버스운전수만으로 돈을 벌어도 가족을 지원할 수 있었는데 80년때는 그렇지 않았어요. 어쩔 수 없이 여자의 사회적 역할도 변해지는 거예요. 그래서 미국에서도 70/80년대는 '섹스혁명', 이혼, 혼자 애를 키우는 어머니, 등등 이슈 된 거예요. 그리고 여성패션에서도 이 경향을 보일 수 있었어요. 왜 여성의류에서는 어깨가 남자처럼 커진 건가요? 그러니까. 그리고 출근하면서 자기 펌프를 벗고 운동화 신는 이미지는 바로 그 거였어요. 여성들의 역할이 혼란스러워지니까. 한국은 그런 과정 중인 거예요. 미국의 Dynasty와 Dallas이란 드라마는 이런 무섭고 파워플한 여자들을 보여준 거고 그리고 처음으로 어깨 큰 패션을 막 일반화를 시킨 거고요.

달IMF 한국은 그렇게 달라요? 더 웃기는 건 IMF 시대 바로 끝났고 80년대의 패션 은 다시 유행 된 것. ㅋㅋ

All this ado about women's roles in society aren't that surprising, though. Take the US, for instance. America is a pretty conservative society – what other countries in the world besides conservative Islamic theocracies have banned it completely? – and gender roles until the 1970's were pretty conservative. If you ask my old sociology professor from college, it wasn't until the economy shrank and inflation made being a single-earner household for most families impossible that women started heading into the workplace en masse, and the changes in their social roles happened as economic power added to women's set of social options: divorce, marrying later, being finicky about partners, not being absolutely dependent on a man, etc.

That's about when shoulder pads started getting bigger, and you have the ubiquitous image of the "working girl" who commutes to work in her Reeboks but then changes into her power bitch heels. You had Dynasty and Dallas to show us all the power that women could wield, in the scariest possible ways, and even a princess (Diana) was wearing power suits, while Margaret Thatcher was showing the western world that women can indeed run shit.

And we had controversy. Sound familiar?
