As usual, the online fashion press is stating the perfectly obvious by telling us that booties and other types of ankle boots are in (which anyone who has been in a public place would have know more than a month ago), but there is some useful information, nevertheless.

In an nutshell, ankle boots are a hit (so says the article) because it adds a lot of apparent length to the leg in a way that traditional boots can’t. And since Korean women are obsessed with height, which most women cite as a reason for wearing high heels all the time, it’s a boon. You get the boot but don’t give have to give up any leg. As we said back in August, this is about as “Oxfordy” as we think the trend will ever go in Korea, since shoes and overall women’s style tends not to go as androgynous as in the US or Europe, and stays on the safer side of “girly.” And we don’t think it’s about “adding length” as much as the look and style of the shoe itself.

The Seoul Shinmun reports on a story from The New York Times, which focused on the sudden lack of black models on the runways of high fashion, except for one biracial Black-Korean woman:

한국계 흑인인 신예 모델 샤넬 이만 로빈슨(17)이 백인모델들로 패션쇼 무대가 채워지고 있는 기현상에 일침을 놓았다. 뉴욕타임스는 14일(현지시간) 패션업계의 흑인모델 배제 현상이 극에 달했다면서 로빈슨의 발언을 전했다.

미 국 애틀랜타 출신인 그녀는 한국계 혼혈인 어머니와 흑인 아버지 사이에서 태어난 잘 나가는 10대 모델이다.DKNY, 돌체&가바나, 에르메스 등 내노라 하는 디자이너 쇼무대에 섰고 세계적인 모델전문 사이트 모델스닷컴(www.models.com)에 이름을 올리기도 했다. [원기사를 꼭 일으시죠!

Although black women in the United States spend more than $20 billion on apparel each year, according to estimates by TargetMarketNews.com, it was hard to discern an awareness of this fact on the part of designers showing in New York, where black faces were more absent from runways than they have been in years.

Of the 101 shows and presentations posted on Style.com during the New York runway season, which ended a month ago, more than a third employed no black models, according to Women’s Wear Daily. Most of the others used just one or two. When the fashion caravan moved to London, Paris and Milan, the most influential shows — from Prada to Jil Sander to Balenciaga to Chloé and Chanel — made it appear as if someone had hung out a sign reading: No Blacks Need Apply.

“It’s the worst it’s ever been,” said Bethann Hardison, a former model who went on to start a successful model agency in the 1980s that promoted racial diversity.

…Honorine Uwera, a young Canadian of Rwandan heritage, was hired during the New York season for just five runway shows.

While Ms. Uwera’s showing was respectable, it was not enough to justify the cost to her agency of sending her to Europe, where most modeling careers are solidified.

…the reality was that only one black model worked at anything like the frequency of her white counterparts: Chanel Iman Robinson, 17, who is African-American and Korean [pictured at the top of this post. 무슨 일이죠? 왜 흑인들이 90년대부터 잘 나가고 있었는데 갑자기 또 없어진 건가? 너무 많이 성공적으로 나가면 안 되는 건가? 패션세계는 흑인이 있는 걸 기겹나? 뉴욕타임즈 기사에 따라면 에이젠트들이 ‘디자이너의 탓이라’고 주장하며 디자이너한테 물어보면은 ‘백인 모델밖에 없어서 어쭐 수 없다’고 말하는 거예요.

핑계같은 말인 것같은데 요즘에 ‘앤드로이드 룩’ (로봇처럼 감정이 없는 모습)이 유행이래요. 어떻게 보면 아이스퀸처럼 생긴 아주 백인스러운 백인 스타일을 좋아하는 것같기도 하고. 근데 그렇게 백인이 우월주의적으로 보는 게 그냥 다른 말로 바로 ‘인종차별’아닌가?

Just one image of a black model appears in the issue, midway through a 17-page article photographed by Miles Aldridge and titled the “Vagaries of Fashion.” In it, the glacial blond Anja Rubik portrays an indolent, overdressed Park Avenue princess with a gilded apartment, a couture wardrobe, two towhead children and a collection of heavy rocks. The sole black model in the pictorial is more modestly attired, in an aproned pinafore.

As the article from the Kyunghyang Shinmun says, walking quickly twice a day (preferably NOT in high heels or other constrictive wear!) for 30 mins each time, plus stretching, can keep back problems and other ailments away. Apparently, it has a REALLY big effect, according to the research cited in the news piece. While not news to most of us, how many of us actually do it?

These days, fashion that responds to the long days of the rainy season, as well as just more rain in general, seem to be finally taking hold. According to Chosun.com:

고려대기환경연구소 정용승 소장이 분석한 기상통계자료에 따르면 지난 9월 한 달간 일조시간(해가 드러난 시간)은 평년보다 하루 2.8시간(168분)이 부족했다. 지난 7~9월 92일간 비가 온 날은 56.1일에 달하고, 서울·강릉·청주·춘천·서산은 60일 이상 비가 왔다. 사흘 중 이틀은 비가 왔다는 얘기다. 정 소장은 “근래에 없던 현상으로, 지구 온난화로 인한 기후변화가 확실히 진행되고 있다”고 분석했다.

Of course, none of this is really that much news to some Americans in big cities, since such rain gear has been around for a while, which we reported on even here some time ago, before you were really able to see any cute rubber rain boots in Seoul, or many people sporting fancy designer umbrellas.

But a few more Korean women are foregoing the questionable (and kinda gross, in my opinion) practice of purposefully wearing dress or summer sandals and just resigning oneself to get wet, then coming in and (hopefully) washing one’s feet at the office or other final destination.

I thought that it might be some kind of wonderful to not ruin one’s shoes and skin (and these days, expensive pedicures!) with nonsense behavior like that. Seems that more and more women in Seoul are thinking the same way.

Apparently, Kim So-yeon’s dress, designed by Emanuel Ungaro, which she wore at the Pusan International Film Festival is causing controversy among netizens.

This is somewhat surprising, since not only is the dress not actually more revealing than many shoulder-less designs presently in play on Korean stars, but is something straight off a runway, done by a respected and talented Western designer. This is controversial?

솔직히 누가 더 노출이 심한가요? 보통 일반적인 미국인의 경우 하체를 노출하는게 더 심하다고 생각하죠. 나도 그렇게 생각해요. 한국인들은 상체를 노출하는 것에 더 많이 신경을 쓰는 거구요, 한국처럼 추운 겨울에도 미니스커트를 입는 나라는 사실 거의 없어요. ㅋㅋㅋ

Seriously – is this really risqué? Maybe I’m just looking at it from an American perspective, which I think tends to be more conservative when it comes to showing leg than in Korea. And in Korea, people tend to worry about exposing the upper body a lot, such as with exposed shoulders, which could get you in trouble as recently as 5-7 years ago, or having a pierced belly button, which only “bad girls” did as recently as circa 2003, but now is par for the course.

Perhaps it’s no surprise that Korea seems to be the only country I know of in which it’s nearly as common to see miniskirts in the deepest cold of winter as it is in the summer. In a fashion culture that actually has fur-lined panties for keeping warm for miniskirt wear in the winter, is a slightly exposed midriff (not even to the belly button!) and vertically-exposed boobies – instead of across the top – really that shocking?
