Sports Seoul

Sports Seoul

Sports Seoul, a Korean tabloid daily, is asking the very good question of why there are so many fashion-centered dramas taking center stage these days. Besides analyzing the somewhat perhaps obvious (to Americans) common points that the stories all centrally revolve around 1) fashion editors working in magazines, 2) they are all set in NYC, and that 3) conspicuous consumption of brand labels are always key parts of the shows, the article goes on to discuss the important of such shows in Korea.

이 중 가장 중심은 Sex and the City (이후론 “SATC”)이다.

Most central of all of them is Sex and the City (hereafter, “SATC”), and any Korean woman worth her soy sauce knows what a key role that show alone has played in starting off the “shoeaholic” craze from around 3 years ago (and in fact coined the loan-word in the Korean language, which we reported on two summers ago, when this site started), as well as stoked the already-existing fire of intense interest in brand-name items.

Korean women have always generally been interested in brand-name items, but it’s only been since the late 1980’s that the elite could afford them, and most people here made do with very good fakes or cheaper, similar versions of brand-name items. But in general, most Korean women wouldn’t think to spend more than $50-100 on shoes, with the quality of the knock-offs keeping people from shelling out too much.

But with SATC and the wave of fashion-oriented content, as well as the increased consumer power of single women who are waiting longer to marry these days and have more time drawing paychecks while generally living with parents, this is changing. The coinage of the somewhat negative term “bean-paste soup girl” (된장녀) speaks to this change: it describes a working woman who saves her money at the office during lunchtime by eating cheaper Korean fare for $4 and spending a lot on expensive designer items at the end of the month.

Picture 3-1
A Negative Comparison of the "Bean-Paste Girl" to the "Classy Girl" - source]

SATC and the behavior/consumption patterns it encourages has definitely upped the ante on this ongoing debate over the role of women in Korean society, as well as what appropriate social roles are. The release of the movie is surely going to keep this debate hot, especially amongst men who feel threatened by this new, assertive, take-no-crap figure, and the women who see this figure as a new ideal.

More than the US, in a Korea in which the social roles of women are in flux, in which the ability to conspicuously consume has a much shorter history than in the US, and in which traditional social roles for women are increasingly clashing with the new, SATC is going to create a lot of debate, even as this powerful cultural phenomenon in the minds of many young Korean women will encourage not just more consumption, but a continued rethinking of what it means to be a young woman in terms of sex, love, marriage, and many issues that have been much more worked out in the US.

In America, SATC is much more of a fun show, a piece of entertainment that is cause for talk at the water cooler and a perhaps a little more label envy; in South Korea, it represents something much deeper, and poses a lot of questions for women who are increasingly the focus of a society in rapid and constant flux.

Hello to FeetManSeoul readers! I’m Nathan, and some of you might know about my site Korea Beat, where we translate interesting and offbeat Korean news articles into English. Since FeetManSeoul and Korea Beat like each other I’ll be posting here occasionally with fashion and style-related translations with commentary from FMS himself.

I’m a 27-year old American who lived in Korea for two years as an English teacher, so I’ve been studying Korean for about three and a half years, mostly through self-study. The first year that I lived in Korea I grew to love the country’s energy and verve, and then dropped out of law school to go back. Eventually I started reading Korean newspapers for more practice and started translating them into English as a hobby, which grew into putting them on my blog, and Korea Beat was born. Even though I don’t live in Korea these days I still keep up with studying Korean and my wife, who is Japanese, is a serious kimchi addict.

So, I’m excited to join the FeetManSeoul community! And our first article is about calf surgery in Korea, from the online newspaper eDaily:

Images Photo Files Np S 2008 05 Ps08051600019-1Obviously, many women want to have slim legs, but it’s taking care of you calves is especially important for women who do stand-up work. Standing all day thickens your calves, because you’re constantly pumping your calf mucles. When the weather starts getting hot, short skirts and pants come into fashion — and along with them, the anguish of women who work on their feet all day long.

26-year old stewardess Lee Min-Gyeong (pseudonym) agonizes over her thick calves. She wears high heels on flights that can go over 10 hours each, standing all the time, leaving nothing she can do to prevent her calves from getting bigger, and when she looks at her thick calves she doesn’t just not feel good — she has a complex over it. She feels distressed when she compares her legs to those of her co-workers’, and even on her of days she avoids wearing high heels or, of course, short skirts. She heard from a co-worker that there is an easy to solve the problem through surgery, and decided to have calf-reducing surgery. She went for a consultation to a well-known hospital and put in an application to take time off from work.

Cases of thick calves can be grouped three ways — an excessive accumulation of fat; thickening due to both fat and muscle; and finally, an excess of muscle alone. It is possible to get thick calves through too much exercise, but it also happens when you work while standing all day in high heels. Wearing such shoes and then standing for a long time creates a synergy effect in your body because that situation stimulates the production of muscle. The women’s jobs which create the most stress over thick calves are stewardess, teacher, clerk, and narrator model. Because there are so many situations which can create calf thickening, normal liposuction alone cannot solve the problem, but removing muscle can. Because exercise and dieting cannot reduce thick calves, it can be seen that an operation to reduce the amount of muscle is unavoidable.

Previous methods of reducing calf size had the drawback of causing nerve damage which impeded exercise or had other side effects, including relapses and asymmetry, but new surgeries safely remove only muscle. The surgery can remove inner and outer muscle, and its semi-permanent maintenance is a strong point. Also, only local anaesthesia is required and once the swelling subsides a week or two later you can see the results immediately.

Recently, endoscopy is being used to increase the benefits of the new surgery. Jo Gil-hwan, chief of the Misou PLastic Surgery Clinic (미소유성형외과), explained, “the use of endoscopy when performing calf reduction surgery allows for a smaller incision and less scarring. Furthermore, bleeding is reduced and this allows the removal of muscle and fat without touching the nerves and the surgery can be tailored to the individual.” Also, not only can the surgery be used for thick calves caused by obesity but also for those caused by naturally thick calves and those caused by walking around a lot.

For our English-speaking readers, I’ll just summarize by saying this is a public letter I wrote through OhMyNews to Soyeon to wish her good luck and much fun in space. It’s printed in Korean, so I’ll just summarize: I told her that she doesn’t need to be wished “good luck” or “a safe trip” because she’d already have heard that so many times, and that I thought she didn’t need it. She’s going to come back a different person and a true inspiration to us all — hero and all that — but that she should most focus on having fun in space, because it’s going to be the ride of her life.

Godspeed, Soyeon!

Arrrrgh. The low quality of fashion photography in the daily rags really annoys me, and I’m pretty used to it. But this really takes the cake. Below is a photo set from one of the sports newspapers – Dailian – with a photoset of Gong Hyo-jin trying to look cute as she promotes one of the many online shopping malls that are a dime-a-dozen on the Korean Internet. Besides the horrible lighting, awkward poses, lack of basic color correction, and corny clothes, the whole concept itself was enough to leave a scar on my mind.

Where to begin? Whew. How about Auto Levels in Photoshop? Basic color correction? I mean, the point is supposed to be that she’s all “colorful” and stuff, right? The rainbow swirl lollipop, pink pants, and silver shoes were supposed to pop; instead, they’re just flat against the gray (!!!) wall, a background that should allow for easy color correction in the first place, which one can also reference against her white shirt. Hello? Anyone home?

 News 200803 News1204707685 103722 2 MNews1204707685 103722 2 M Copy

I Auto Leveled, then color corrected manually a bit, trying to make her whites white, reds red, and pink pop. I think I saturated a bit too hot by setting the color space to Adobe 1998, but that’s a good space for Internet pics (thanks, Oak). Didn’t anyone over at the Dailian go to a Photoshop hagwon at least?

I also sharpened a bit much, and her skin tones are a bit reddish, but I tend to like warm tones, and it’s a damn sight better than the gray haze that kills the original image. Also – what’s with the multiple shadows in all the shots? Use a darker background, hello? And maybe if you did, her clothes would look brighter, yeah? To kill them shadows more, try a softbox, yo.

These poses are all ridiculous, awkward, and just feel all-around fake. Sit on the bike, at least. Here’s a bike shot, baby:

So – is it just that the Dailian folks don’t know what they’re doing over there, or are they just lazy?

Mar 5, 2008 Author: heymika | Filed under: Blogged In (from Korean news), Trends

From Herald Biz: “두근두근 새내기 패션, 어떻게 입어야 돋보일까?”

 Site Data Img Dir 2008 03 05 200803050007 Site Data Img Dir 2008 03 05 200803050006

Hold on…wait a minute.

Isn’t this the same stuff they come up with every March, when it’s freshman-year fashion news for the new kids? “Oh, no! Whatever shall I do? I’m a freshman and have abso-LUTE-ly nothing to wear! I got into college but don’t have anything other than mommy’s clothes to dress myself with! Whatever shall I do, major newspaper fashion columnist?”
If my memory serves, these are the exact same corny columns that were being published in newspapers and magazines when I was starting college.

If you truly live in fear of being that new girl, fresh out of her high school uniform, with pancake makeup, a disastrous assortment of ill-matched items, and teeter-tottering around on heels you can barely walk in — please just go ask an upperclassman or keep on eye out for the girls who really know how to dress, who really have a sense of style. Start by imitating the styles and looks you like — don’t try to be queen of the school fashion runways in just a day.

That’s exactly why you all have to compare with FMS’s street fashion reports and pictures, right? That’s what we do!

The pose…hairstyle…dress…background…composition…so so amateurish and unsexy. Very bad stuff here – a gothic bathtub cut off at both sides and world clocks on the wall also cut off awkwardly. Balance and composition, dress and styling, pose and attitude.

This is what we get for new talent Han Tae-yun’s portfolio pictures in SK Telecom’s studio? Pretty under par stuff if you ask me.

Then wear a miniskirt, says this Newsis article. Well, that makes sense, but in the winter? According to the article, which interviewed fashionistas and people behind the sales counter, this winter, online sales of extreme miniskirts and short shorts has INCREASED by more than 10% this winter, and the number of women coming into women’s clothing stores to buy miniskirts has reportedly DOUBLED. Huh?

Well, the explanation given in the article seems to make sense, since there are other fashion trends enabling this, including the thick tights or leggings phenomenon, which makes this obviously much more bearable than bare legs or stockings, combined with the considerably less harsh cold so far this winter.

So one can see women wearing some pretty short shorts, even in the coldest of cold, as we’ve talked about before on this site. Combined with the tall socks trends of the last few years, skirts have become more viable options as they’ve come to be warmer fashion options overall. And since Britney Spears thigh-highs are pretty common, a few inches of exposed thigh, which are thicker than other parts of the body, isn’t going to kill nearly as much as it might have in years past.

A glimpse of true glamour graced the red carpet at the Blue Dragon Awards last Friday, when Korea’s most beautiful actresses wore some of the most stunning dresses the fashion world could produce…The stars usually start thinking about what they are going to wear more than a month before they walk down the red carpet, meeting with their stylists and representatives from various designers. Then a couple of dozen dresses ranging in price from anywhere between W5 million and W20 million make their way across the Pacific. They try on about 10 before choosing about three to have them tailored for the final. Thanks to the prearrangements by stylists and brand representatives, no actress will wear the same dress as another. [English article]

What is FASHION?

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening."

--- Coco Chanel (1883–1971)

What is STYLE?

"Fashions fade, style is eternal.”

--- Yves Saint Laurent (b. 1936)

What is SEXY?

"Darling, the legs aren't so beautiful, I just know what to do with them."

--- Marlene Dietrich (1901–1992)

What is TALENT?

"I was asked to act when I couldn't act. I was asked to sing 'Funny Face' when I couldn't sing, and dance with Fred Astaire when I couldn't dance - and do all kinds of things I wasn't prepared for. Then I tried like mad to cope with it.”

---Audrey Hepburn (1929-1993)
