When did high school kids get so fashionable? Well, it is Myeongdong, I guess. But still, things have changed a lot in the space of 10-12 years, from back when such a sight in broad daylight with adults around would have been nearly unthinkable. Nowadays, Korean students are no longer just living a life of study and testing, but consume goods, go on dates, and otherwise display a lot more maturity than in the old days. Things done changed.

“Hot.”

Knit caps are hot? Like “making-me-sweat” hot, or “this-is-the-next-new-trend” kinda hot? Well, likely both.

Only a year or so late, this trend has hit Korea like the Allies storming the beaches of Normandy. It’s everywhere.

Even in the summer, especially in the summer, knit hats are hot.

Just in Dongdaemun for around an hour or so, I shot several of the heads of several young ladies. This trend is hot.

I just wanted to point out how fly Korean fashion is getting, for the first time…umm…ever. For the first time I can remember, ready-to-wear and everyday street clothes in Korea are keeping up with international fashion trends even as there’s developed a unique Korean “look” that is worth paying attention to.

To the new fashion leaders of Asia, FMS offers a hearty salute! You go, girls!

From Sports Seoul:

Simply put, there are a lot of fake, fake, fake bags on the streets of Korea. I mean, fake. Faker than a $12 dollar bill, as they say. For anyone with a keen eye on the streets, though, this isn’t news. And for the last couple years, the king of fake bags goes to Louis Vuitton’s “Monogram” series, and man, did it win by a large margin. Because the fakery is just so obvious, and just so many of ‘em!

Different shades and colors of bag. Backwards LV logos. Wrong handles and materials. Whew.

There’s nothing wrong with a “fake” if that’s what you want; but if it’s so obvious, why even bother? Especially with a bag that is so popular, even everyday people are bound to know it’s not real?

Here’s one that looks like a Vivienne Westwood, and I don’t know whether it’s real or not, partially because it isn’t so common that you can just tell right away by a mental comparison to a real one. And it looks alright, and the lady in the picture’s successfully rockin’ it.

Img 0252 Copy

She’s got the style, the mod haircut (sorry I had to cut it off here), the even more mod tube minidress, and the shoes to match. The bag adds a splash of color against a background that she meant to highlight the bag. It’s not my style, but it still works. Here are some domestic, non-designer bags that frankly think look much better than the designer stuff that’s supposed to be impressing somebody.

Img 9979 CopyImg 0153 Copy

Img 9793 CopyImg 4944 Copy

Img 3279 Copy-1

They’re all working it – looks nice, looks classy. So is the lady going casual at the bottom – the pink and white repetition is pleasant and not too much.

So really – would you rather have a bad fake bag, the one that everyone has or wants and is going to also know is fake – or wouldn’t you just rather have a nice-looking bag that goes with your personality and what you’re wearing? Personally, I’d choose the latter. Because just because you have the bag – even if it was real – it still doesn’t mean the bag goes with everything.

Img 8761 CopyImg 3135 Copy

In a way, I tend to think that if people are so mismatched, but really, really wanted to show off their bag for some reason – then maybe it’s real. (Even if neither one of the ones in the picture above is.)

In a way, I have more respect for the girl who decides to get a bag that’s not even trying to be “fake” but just trying to emulate the style of the famous bag without actually trying to be that bag. You can buy it for $10 and kinda look the look, and no one’s even trying to see if it’s fake – you’re just brave enough to know it and wear the bag anyway.

Img 2971 Copy

Oh, yeah! Not even trying to be a fake Louis Vuitton – it’s just got the same color scheme and shape, but didn’t even bother with the logos. Now, that is simply ghetto fabulous. Love it!

The Korean media’s been reporting on the major losses incurred from the ubiquity of fake bags on the street, and the high quality of fake gear; and I believe the hype:

Picture 4-7

Yet, my question is – so where are these high-quality fake bags? OK – they’re everywhere – I’m just being facetious. Yet, it seems that I haven’t come across too many with my camera, and seem to get the really bad fakes; well, I guess those are the ones you notice first.

Here’s a real one – I think:

Img 2297 Copy

Img 2282 CopyImg 2284 Copy

The color, design, and “feel” looks right. She looks like an uptown girl in an “uptown” place; but then again – these days, how can you tell? And as the old saying goes: “If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and talks like a duck…”

Well, that’s all that really matters, right?

What is FASHION?

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening."

--- Coco Chanel (1883–1971)
