오픈토나 생달식 부츠들이 정말 유행인 것같아요. 지난 여름처럼 생달들이 생달일 뿐만 한 것아니라 범범 부츠가 된 것같네요. 더욱더 몇년전부터 낮은 부츠가 인기 있었고 샌들이라도 신으려면 지퍼를 사용해야 한 거예요.

Open-toed booties are all the rage, a natural extension of the strappy sandals that became dense enough to be confused with ankle boots, which many effectively became last summer, zipper to get in and all.

위에 있는 구두에서 이번에 조금 더 가리는 부츠가 다음 단계가 된 거예요. 가을이 되도 눈이 와도 많은 한국여자들이 끝까지 치마를 입는 것처럼 죽어도 오픈토 부츠를 신을 거예요. 물론 타이츠랑. 그래서 이런 앤클 부츠를 신는만큼 짧은 치마들도 많이 보일 수 있을 것같아요.

From the tighter straps and higher, sturdier sandals of the summer come the natural next step. Korean girls don’t wanna give up the straps, nor the open-toes. And they won’t, even into the winter months. When it gets wintery cold, expect girls to forgo the straps, but not the open-toes. Thick black or colored stockings will go with ankle boots with a peep-toe this winter.

I think gladiator sandals are hot. That is, with the right amount of straps, the appropriate width of the straps, the right material of the shoe, perhaps with a heel or without–basically the right combination of all these details.  They are versatile; they look great with skirts, jeans, shorts, and dresses. In fact, I can’t think of any article of clothing that would not look good paired with gladiator-inspired shoes.

개인적으로 글래디에이터 샌들을 매우 핫한 이이템이라고 생각한다. 당연히 샌들 끈의 두께와 갯수, 신발의 제질, 힐이 있나 없나 같은 세세한 부분의 조화가 완벽한 글래디에터 샌들을 탄생시키는 결정적인 요소들이다. 그리고 글래디에이터 샌들은 청바지에서 짧은 치마에도 잘 어울려 활용하기가 그다지 어렵지 않다.

My first pair of gladiators were from Banana Republic three years ago, right around the time when people called them “Jesus’ shoes” and thought gladiator sandals looked like freak shoes. Despite the public’s distaste, I took pride in my sandals. They were bronze leather gladiator flats with braided straps. My favorite way to wear these were to tuck them in my jeans and tie the braided straps around my ankles. I would then wear a earth-tone top and a cotton dress jacket, and complete the look with a pair of big gold earrings.

처음 글래디에이터 샌들을 구입한 것은 3년 전이다. 그 당시 국내에서 글래디에이터 샌들이라는 단어는 생소했을 것이다. 그래도 꿋꿋이 청바지를 글래디에이터 샌들 안에 집어 넣어 신었다.

Most people in Seoul don’t dress like that. Or at least, they don’t like to dress their gladiator sandals the way I do. Short skirts and shorts are the norm, with the occasional pair of  jeans (rarely tucked in).  One day I was sitting in the terrace of a cafe in Apgujeong when I saw a sweet-looking girl with long voluminous hair wearing a flower-print skirt with a soft cotton top.  I looked down to check out her shoes: black gladiator sandals with gold studs. I liked the stark constrast of her “good girl” look and the dark, studded gladiator sandals and smiled. But not for long. I gave the babyfaced, innocent-looking girl a second look and peered closer to discover her white socks underneath the gorgeous black leather straps with shiny, gold studs. Gasp.

그러나 국내에서 글래디에이터 샌들을 신는 여성들을 보면 주로 짧은 치마나 바지를 입는다. 청바지와 글래디에이터 샌들을 간혹 한 번 씩 보긴 한다.

어느 날 압구정 한 커피숍에서 창문 밖으로 사람 구경을 하다가 청순해 보이는 한 여자가 눈에 띄였다. 그녀는 약간의 곱슬 머리와 우유처럼 하얗고 부드러운 피부의 베이비페이스였다. 그녀는 하얀 면 티와 꽃무늬 치마를 입고 글래디에이터 샌들을 신었다. 청순한 그녀의 이미지와 검은 색 글래디에이터 샌들의 조화가 흥미로워 미소를 지었다. 그러나 미소는 그녀의 멋진 가죽 샌들 사이로 보이는 양말을 본 순간 사라졌다. 어머나…

Personally I only wear socks when they are hidden. They only serve a utiliarian purpose–to keep my sneakers less smelly when going for a jog.  Any sensible woman, in my humble opinion, should avoid wearing socks when wearing footwear that show your toes! I hope my sentiment is shared by others…

한국에서는 어디서나, 동네에서도 우아한 패션을 보일 수 있네요! ‘동네패션’ 만세!

In Korea, even a sleepy residential area can be home for the fashionable.

강 건너 남쪽, 특히 논현, 압구정, 청담(세 곳 모두 매우 근접해 있고 한 장소로도 정의될 수있다. 아무튼)으로 가면, 확실히 화려함이나 세련됨을 강조한 서구적, 디자이너 옷 스타일을 볼 수 있다. 종종, 화려함과 세련됨 두 가지를 혼합하기도 한다. 사람들은 바쁘다. 또 그들은 더 많은 돈을 가지고 있고 모든 사람들이 뭔가 중요한 것을 하고 있는 것 같다. 아님 적어도 사람들이 그들에 관한 모든 것을 중요하다고 생각하기를 좋아하는 것 같다. 어쨌든, 이 지역에서 돈 그리고 미국과 유럽의 영향은 훨씬 더 직접적이고 분명하다.

Going below the river, especially to the neighborhoods of Nonhyeon, Apkujeong, or Cheongdam (which are all pretty much adjacent to one another and define a single general area, anyway), the style becomes decidedly more Western and designer-oriented, with more emphasis on either total flash or refined comfort. Often, you get a mix of both. People are busy, they often have more money, and it feels that everyone is doing something important. Or at least, people like to think that everything about them is important. In any case, money and the influence of American and European fashion is far more direct and obvious in this area.

그리고 어린아이부터 할머니까지, 모든 연령대의 사람들이 옷을 잘 입는 편이고, 심지어는 할아버지들까지도 깔끔하게 입으신다.

And people of all ages dress to impress, from grandma to grandkid, and even grandpa is straight pimped out.

대체적으로 다양하고 세련된 룩이 많고 리본이 많은 소녀스타일 혹은 강북의 한국 여성들이 많이 추구하는 일시적으로 유행하는 스타일은 보기 힘들다. 예를들면, Gmarket에서 구입한 이효리 흰색부츠들 그리고 사람들이 유니폼 같이 입는 다른 일정한 트랜드들.

And in general, there’s a tasteful and clean-cut look that eschews some of the ribbon-filled girliness and other faddish extremes of more domestic Korean fashion north of the river, e.g. black athletic thigh-highs from Yi Hyori, the same pair of white boots from Gmarket, and other specific trends that people buy into like a uniform.

아래 사진과 같은 스타일처럼 정의를 내리기가 힘든 -물론, 훌륭한 트랜드들이다. – 반면, 강북에서 볼 수 있는 트랜드들은 판박이가 훨씬 많다. 늦은 오후 논현의 작은 거리만 거닐어도 봐줄만한 유쾌한 의상이 많이 있다.

One feels more of an effort to define one’s own style down here — of course, with an eye to greater trends — whereas the north can feel much more cookie-cutter when it comes to specific trends. There are simply a lot of pleasant outfits to look at, even when walking around the small streets of Nonhyeon on a lazy afternoon.

These are what the peoples are wearing in Hongdae these days.

끝까지 오펜토 슈즈는 유행이다. 그래도 보통은 기본으로 스타킹을 신는데… 춥지 않아? ㅋㅋㅋ

There are still some women who are wearing the open-toes to the END. They’re not giving up! Even without the stockings, they apparently don’t feel the cold.

진짜 한국스럽다. Uggs바로 옆에 open-toe 구두 있네. 한국에서는 아무리 추워도 추위를 안 타는 여자들이 있군아!

This is really Korean-style. A pair of warm Uggs next to open-toe pumps in the dead coldest of winter. Even in the most frigid weather imaginable, there are still many intrepid women who wear minis and sandals where even angels fear to tread.

Noticing the continuing trend of shorter, cutesy coats these days. Perhaps to match the shorter, cutesy winter miniskirts, minidresses, and short shorts. Ah, Korean winter.

I’m still processing the pictures of the University Student Fashion Week and the Korean Design Contest, and came across this picture while I was editing. I’m not exactly sure what effect she was going for, but I respect the fact that she was going for something. It’s a little off, but she was trying to work it! Which is all that counts. Korean street fashion, fighting!

지난 번에 신촌과 명동의 겨울 패션을 조금 알아봤는데 이젠 많이 추워져서 또 찍었어요! 명동과 신촌에서 많이 찍은 이유는 그런 동네에서 제일 대표적인 한국의 최근 패션 트렌드를 볼 수 있어서요. 신촌은 젊은 애들의 놀이터이며 명동은 (특히 평일 날의 낮에) 좀더 나이가 많은 직장인과 성숙한 여자들의 스타일이라고 생각해요. 이 동네들이 둘다 다영성이 많고 요즘의 많이 나타나타는 거죠.

Although we looked a bit at winter fashions in a recent post, now that it’s colder, I came up with another round of pictures! The reason I shoot so much in Shinchon and Myeongdong is because these two neighborhoods are quite representative of Korean fashion, both in term of the broad range of everyday fashions in each area, along with the fact that Shinchon is a bit younger, while Myeongdong (especially during a workday afternoon) tends a bit more towards the older and more professional.

원래 한국에서는 목도리는 다 파란색이나 빨간색이였잖아요. 이번 시즌까지는 이 만큼 목도리의 다양성을 못 봤어요.

There was a time when all scarves in Korea were basically dark green, blue, or red. I’ve never seen such a diversity of scarves as this winter season.

이번 겨울에 여성 코트는 크고 동글된 칼라가 많이 있고 크고 귀여운 버튼 있는 코트도 많이 볼 수 있네요.

Then there are the coats with the large, rounded collars and big, cute buttons.

그리고 스타킹의 스타일들이 한 2년전쯤부터 많이 다양화 된 거예요. 조금 촌스러운 하트나 리븐 무늬부터 있고 우아하고 컬러플한 스타킹까지. 한 2시즌전부터 유행했던 빤짝빤짝하는 것도었고 그리고 작년쯤부터 여러 색깔로 나온 뚜거운 타이츠도 볼 수 있네요. 정말 옛날의 흑/백/회색으로 나온 것밖에 없었는데 지금 다양성을 갑자기 생긴 거예요.

And stocking styles have also gotten more varied from about two years ago. You’ve got the standard cutesy hearts and ribbons on stockings, classy yet colorful ones, the shiny tights that came into style a couple winters ago, and just colorful tights that hit the streets with a bang from especially last season. This is a big change from the boring black/white/gray options of just a few years ago.

I like this picture a lot. In one instant, it captures so much, especially the more you look at it. As a photographer, I like the composition, pose, and the matching colors. If you look at her bag, shoes, and skin, they match each other with a cream/tan pairing, which stands our against the dark color of her knit minidress. And she’s casual and comfortable, yet dressed up a bit. Her shoes work the same way, as they are obviously comfortable, but they are a bit higher heels than casual would require, and the ankle strap adds just an extra bit of verve that office wear wouldn’t require. And the moment itself is nice — she’s on the phone and obviously coming out of her building to find someone on the street, with the pen around her neck and a stack of papers in her opposite hand. I think it’s a cool shot of a woman who doesn’t have to make an effort to exude a natural kind of beauty, who can look fabulous even when she’s working and not even trying.

정치와 패션이 어울리 않다고 누가 그랬나요? 전혀 안그래요. 어제 봤던 오바마 티셔츠를 보면 그 사실을 알 수 있겠죠.

가장 좋아했던 셔츠는: ‘Represent!’

‘Represent‘이란 뜻이 ‘대표하다’는 거지만 약간 힙합의 문화에서일어난 의미를 포함해서 생각하면 ‘자기 그룹/민족/믿음을 자랑스럽게 대표를 해라’는 의미도 내포 있어요. 왠지 오바마의 캠패인하고 딱 어울리는 느낌이어서 너무 멋진 티셔츠이예요.

It was a celebration in Itaewon last night at the Orange Tree, a small bar nestled away in the foreigner community of Haebangchon. The mood was jovial and Americans were unapologetic, but this time it was wrapped up in a more lighthearted and hopeful spirit. As one person said, “For the first time in my adult life I’m proud to be an American,” to which a Canadian responded, “for the first time in my life, I want to be an American.”

Who said politics can’t be fashionable? These are just some of the Obama t-shirts floating around that night.

My favourite: “Represent!”

아무리 가끔씩 놀려도 한국의 ‘아줌마’들이 나름대로 패션어블이잖아요. 이 사진에서는 ‘pursed’이란 말이 두 가지 의미 있어요. 동사로는 입술을 ‘purse’하면 오모리다는 뜻이고 명사로는 돈주머니나 여자의 가방이죠. 이 아줌마가 문명히 쇼핑하고 있고 그리고 왠지 돈을 잘 보기하지 않은 성격이 있는 것같더라고요. 아마 입술을 오모리는 거니까 스크루지같은 느낌이 났더라고요.

Although they are sometimes the butt of jokes, in their own particular way, the Korean ajumma is one of the most fashionable figures on the streets. In this picture, between the purse being held close to the breast and the pursed lips, I definitely got the sense that this was a discerning lady who didn’t easily part with her money, even as she’s perhaps ready to shop ’til she drops.

Here are five shots that don’t really go together in any way — they’re just shots I thought would be fun to discuss while I continue to organize a boatload of pictures.

질문은: 이것이 진짜 한국 스타일이라고 전제하고, 이게 근본적으로 촌스러운 룩인지, 아니면 전혀 다른 미적 감각을 소유했다고 생각해야 하는지, 당신의 생각은 어떤가요?

The question is: Given that these are pretty “Korean” styles, would you say that these are essentially bad looks — derivative or not — or can they be just thought of as belonging to a totally different aesthetic altogether?

“Earth tones”(어스톤: 연한 회색에서 검은 갈색에 이르는 난색조[暖色調])과 다른 자연에서 내려온 색깔들도 아주 많이 보일 수 있네요.

Earth tones and brighter natural colors seem to be in, too.

OK, I admit it. I like looking at hot pants. It’s obvious, surely. But that’s not the only reason I have so many pics of them — they really are EVERYwhere! And I don’t think the trend’s gonna stop just because the weather gets a bit cooler — I think you’re going to see the trend continue in one of these two ways: either with stockings¹, or with leggings. This will continue until the first snow hits the ground.

알았어, 인정할께요. 핫팬츠를 보는 걸 좋아하죠. 역시 분명한 거죠? 근데 다리를 구경하는 것만아니라 또 이유 있어요 — 진짜 사방에 어디서나 있는 거잖아요! 그리고 날씨가 추워질 때 없어질 거아니라고 생각해요. 계속 되면서 2가지 식으로 표현이 되있을 거예요: 스토킹이나² 레깅즈이랑. 아마 첫눈 올 때까지 입을 사람들이 많을 걸요.

요새 셔츠원피스만 아니라 딱 이 얇은 티샤츠 소재로 만든 셔츠원피스를 많이 보이게 되는 거예요. 밑에 이 모양으로. 이 건 뭐라고 하는 건가? 그 날에 명동에서 새 번이나 봤는데. 진짜 자기 스트리트 런웨이의 시간을 잘 이요하고 있었던 것같더라고요. 이쁘다!

These days, I’ve been seeing not only shirt minidresses, but these t-shirt minidresses with the uneven, t-shirt-like hems. Anyone know what these are called and where they’re coming from? I like her big, off-center flower. Saw her three times that day in Myeongdong — she was definitely making the most of her street runway time. Work it!

Ah, the shoulders. The racy, exposed shoulder is one thing that Koreans have traditionally worried quite a bit about, and still make a good bit of fashion effort to cover up, or at least be modest about. Of course, many Koreans think Americans are the wild and crazy dressers, and most specifically, dress very “sexy” — but I think that’s the result of the Hollywood image of America. Only in fantasyland can there be a group of like 8 “Friends” who don’t have a single person of color in the mix in NEW YORK CITY, or can “Sex and the City” even seem like its even physically possible to keep up. But skirts and hemlines in general are generally higher here, and the first time in my life I’d ever seen a micro-mini skirt in the dead of winter was in Korea. Such a thing was scarcely imaginable before coming to Korea.

이 걸 처음 봤어요. 밑에서 나오는 어깨커버? 와우. 한국에서는 특히 원피스를 입는 경우에 이런 것들이 흔한 거예요.

This was the first time I’d seen anything like this: a shoulder cover coming from under the dress. Such ideas are fairly common in a lot of women’s fashion here, and is an imperative on many dresses.

한국 여자들 패션의 핵심을 정의하자면, 미국의 “섹시” 코드와 비교해서, 아마도 “내숭“/”얌전“떠는 아가씨 스타일이에요. 근데 한국 여자들 모두 암전한 처자로 보이려고 한다는 것도 아니고, 미국 여자들도 모두 섹시하다고 생각하는 거 아니에요. 하지만 분명히 한국 미의 가장 두드러진 이미지는 바로 억지스러운 아님 과도한 “천상 여자“ 스타일이에요. 이 참한 여자 모습은 1950년대에 미국 사람들이 즐겼던 스타일인데, 50년대를 비웃기라도 하듯, 1970년대부터는 미국 여자들도 이제 힐도 그만 신고 장보러 갈때 화장도 안하고 파우더 룸에 가는 거나 일주일에 한 번씩은 꼭 머리하는 것도 그만두고, 그리고 무엇보다도 중요하게 정장 원피스를 그만 입기 시작했죠.

When it comes to defining the core of Korean female fashion, the cultural codeword here is “demure”¹, as opposed to the American one of “sexy.” Not that all Korean women are demure, nor do all American women define themselves as sexy, but the defining element of much of the Korean look is that of a conscious and overt “feminine” look that many Americans have left in the 1950’s starting around the 1970’s, when, for better or worse, American women stopped putting on heels and makeup to go to the grocery store, getting their hair done once a week, going to the “powder room”, and most importantly, wearing formal dresses.

한국은 하이힐과 화장이 기본적인 룰인 곳이에요. 엑세서리는 필수이고, 거리는 완전 런웨이 뺨 치구요. 또 한국은 페미니즘이라는 개념을 매우 언짢게 생각해요. 남녀 평등을 이론적으로 반기는 사상인데도 말이죠. 쉽게 말해서 남자랑 여자는 점점 더 평등해 보이기는 하지만, 같지는 않다 라는 말이죠. 한국에서 남자는 여전히 남자입니다. 남자들은 양복과 타이를 입고, 짧은 헤어스타일을 하고, 또 가족과 함께 있을 때에도 바지를 입고 있어요. 마찬가지로 여자도 여자에요. 남녀의 지위가 꾸준히 평준화 되어왔지만, 서양에 비해서 성 역할이 아직 많이 바뀌지도 않았어요. 한국의 스타일을 정의한다고 할 수 있는 엄격한 정장식은 사교 모임 같은 곳에서도 확인할 수 있어요. 한국 여자들은 대부분 고전적인 여성스타일로 한껏 꾸미고 입고 나옵니다.

Korea is a place where heels and makeup are the rule, accessories are necessities, and the street is a runway. “Feminism” is still a dirty word here, even if gender equality is a theoretically welcome concept. Put another way, men and women are increasingly seen as more equal, but not the same. Here, men are still men — they tend to wear suits and ties, have short hair, and still wear the pants in the family. Similarly, women are still women, in that gender status has equalized, even if gender roles haven’t much changed, as they have in the West. Put that together with the high level of formality that defines the Korean look in general when socializing on any level, you get women dressing up all the time, and doing so in a very classically feminine way.

이런 “천상 여자” 스타일은 한국에서는 단순한 유행이 아닙니다. 서양에서는 모든 스타일에서 (바지, 츄리닝 바지, 티셔츠 생각해봐요) 점점 더 캐주얼하고 중성화 되는 반면에 꾸준히 보여진 한국 여자들의 모습은 일상 생활에서 입는 옷에서도 세계에서 점점 더 특이하고 독특하게 발전되어 왔습니다.

This classically feminine look isn’t just a trend here — it’s a look that is so constant and persisting that, as the West becomes increasingly casual and androgynous on the everyday level (think pants, sweatpants, and t-shirts), this consistently Korean look becomes increasingly unusual and unique in the world, in terms of what everyday people actually wear every day.

그런데 미국인들, 독일인들, 영국인들, 아니면 일본인들, 브라질 사람들 여성스러운 드레스나 힐, 화장, 안하고 거울 앞에서 매일 아침 한 시간 동안 씨름 안한다는 거 아니에요. 하지만 제가 말하고 싶은 한국 여성들의 특별한 차이점은 그걸 매일매일 한다는 거죠 – 다른 나라 사람들은 적어도 그렇게 많이 하지는 않거든요. 그런 의미에서 한국 여자들은 뉴욕, 런던 이나 베를린에 사는 보통 여자들보다 좀 더 파리나 밀라노 여자들과 같은 대열에 끼울 수 있다고 하겠네요. 다른 어떤 곳에서도 견줄 수 없는 “여성스러움” 또는 “얌전녀” 레베루가 한국에 존재한다는 말씀입니다.

It’s not that no American or German or British or Japanese or Brazilian woman wears feminine dresses, or heels, or makeup, or spends an hour each morning in front of the mirror; yet, the difference is that women from such countries don’t do it every day, or at least, nearly as much. On that level, I’d put Korean women more in line with women from Paris or Milan than the average woman from New York, London, or Berlin. There is just a level of “feminine” or “demure” that just can’t be matched in many places.

이건 사진으로도 좀 표현하기 힘들군요. 여기서 중요하게 봐야 할 건, 일주일중 어느 하루라도 사람들이 많이 다니는 곳 중에 제가 가는 거의 모든 동네에서 정장스러운 원피스나 복장을 한 여자들이 캐주얼하게 입은 여자들 보다 훨씬 많다는 거에요 – 심지어 바지를 입은 여자들 보다도 더 많았습니다. 홍대, 신촌, 명동 같은 데에서 주말 오후를 보낼 때 보면 아실거에요. 정장 원피스나 치마를 입은 사람들이 훨씬 더 많다는걸..

This is hard to express, even through photos. What should be noted here is that on any given day of the week, in almost any place I go where people gather in large numbers, women in formal dresses or outfits far outnumber those in casual mode, or even wearing pants. On a weekend afternoon in Hongdae, Shinchon, or Myeongdong, one would be hard pressed to even find a woman wearing them.

그리고 바짓단이 점점 짧아지고 노출이 심해질 때에 상식적으로는 아마 “섹시”함을 기대할 거에요. 하지만 여전히 문화적 코드는 대부분 “내숭녀”입니다. 저 위의 사진에서도 보시다시피, 매우 짧은 길이와 전통적으로 가슴이나 어깨 같은 민감한 부위를 가려주는 볼레로 탑을 입었는데도 “섹시함”은 조신해보이려는 “내숭”의 미에서 옵니다 – 섹시함이 없다는 건 아니구요.

And even when hems go up and more skin gets exposed, and the desired effect may be “sexy,” the key cultural codeword is generally still “demure.” Even in the picture above, with the very high hemlines and without the bolero tops that traditionally cover the sensitive areas of the chest and shoulders, the “sexiness” comes from its tension with “demureness” — not its absence.

마지막으로 하고 싶은 말! 일반적으로 “얌전한 원피스” 입은 여자들을 카메라에 담기는 더 어려어요. 왜냐면 보통 핫팬츠나 초미니 스커트를 입은 일반 여자들보다 좀 더 나이가 있는 사람이라거나 더 보수적인 사람들이기 때문이지요. 그래서 우리는 포즈를 취해주기로 응한 첫번째 모델에게 많이 고마워요. 그리고 그 여자분도 좋은 사진도 얻고 기사 쓰는 데에도 기여한 좋은 경험 얻었으면 합니다. 좋은 기사 나오게 도와준 거 쌩유!

A final note: it’s generally much harder to get “demure dress” girls on camera, since their wearers seem to be a bit older and a tad more conservative than the average girl in hot pants or micro mini-skirt. So we’d like to thank our first model for agreeing to pose, and we hope she got some good pictures as well as a good experience out of participating in this article. What a good sport!

Perhaps “demure” isn’t the best term, but I was actually going for the closest approximation to the Korean word “얌전한” which is how this sort of dress is described in Korean, and is most closely translated as “demure” by a lot of people. Other translations, such as “meek” or “shy” or “quiet” were thought to be pretty off. “Demure,” My translator in this article, too, thought “demure” to be the best way to put it.
