Some are saying that Korea may be ready for another beauty standard, since Beyonce dropped her, umm…beyonce…on the peninsula last week. Korea got a double-dose of the jelly through Dreamgirls and now, last week’s concert, which had the effect of a cultural neutron bomb on Korea: buildings were left standing, but the population couldn’t escape that woman’s energy. Or her thighs, apparently:

Let’s just hope that Beyonce adds balance to the already obssessive compulsion with looking like a stick in Korea, instead of just becoming another unrealistic standard for Korean woman to achieve. Korean women have spent enough time trying to look white, essentially, so let’s hope this helps calm things down, since I don’t think Korean women are going to be beyoncing around naturally anytime soon.

Let’s hope Beyonce has just helped give women in Korea more options, so that when a fabulous girl with thick thighs and some junk in her trunk wants to put on a mini, and some skinny bitches snicker at her from the corner, she can stop dead in her tracks and spin around with a confident flip of the hair and walk towards them while singing:

Many people are surprised to hear an American say that in Korea, skirts and heels are generally much higher than in the “risque” United States, which is in many ways a very conservative place. And in a society that values women as much (or some might say, even more) for their appearance than skills or work experience, wearing makeup is considered “polite,” showing more leg is the norm, and wearing extreme heels to look taller is more of a requirement than a fashion choice.

Indeed, Korea is the only place where I’ve seen people apply makeup to go to the convenience store, where office uniforms are generally cut above the knee, and most women in their 20’s wear high heels in a city such as Seoul every day.

나같은 미국인이 ‘한국에서는 스커트와 하이힐은 미국보다 훨씬 더 높고 야하다!’고 하는 말을 들으면 많은 한국사람들이 놀래요. 근데 이런바 ‘야한 미국’이란 나라는 거의 텔레비젼/영와관에서만 존재하는 것처럼 한국을 드라마나 영화 통해서만 봤으면…맨날 재벌 아들 사랑에 빠지는 가난하고 착한 여자, 철/고등학교/고향에 다시 돌아가는 깡패들이 많은 줄 알 수 있고 아니면 ‘올드보이’처럼 한국이 잔인한 문화인 줄 알 수 있는 거죠. 마찬가지로 ‘섹스앤더씨티’에서 나오는 케리처럼 살 수 있는 사람이 뉴욕에서 존재하지 않은다. 프리래스 기자로 뉴욕에서 혼자 그런 커다란 아파트에서 전혀 살 수 없고 (한달의 월세는 200만원정도로 나올 텐데?!) 맨날 지미츄 샌들을 신고 다니는 건 완전한 팬타시예요.

그래서 미국사람으로써 전하고 싶은 건 우리 나라(미국)의 패션은 원래 좀 보수적인 거예요. 그 점에 대해서 더 얘기를 나눌 수 있는데 여기서 강조하고 싶은 포인트는 남성우월주의가 많이 나아졌을수록 화장을 덜 자주하고, 하이힐도 덜 신는다. 하이힐은 아에 나쁘다고 생각하는 것아니라 왜 적당하게 신으면 안되는지…Segye.com에 의하면:

한국 여성들은 유난히 유행에 민감한 편인데, 요즘은 한쪽 어깨에 메는 커다란 가방과 날렵한 굽이 있는 하이힐 등이 그런 아이템이 아닌가 싶다. 특히 다른 나라 여성들에 비해 유독 높은 하이힐을 많이 신고 다니는 것으로 보여 척추질환을 치료하는 의사로서 걱정부터 앞선다.

그리고 재밌는 건 미국의 1960년대는 한국의 현재랑 비슷해요. 그냥 돌아온 스타일/유행만 얘기하는 것아니라 그때는 미국에서 외모를 신경을 많이 쓴 거죠. 남성들의 시선은 중요하니까.

It’s funny how similar Korea now and the US in the 60’s looked not just in terms of recurring fashion trends, but in terms of how much sheer energy women put into their appearance back then, before the sweeping women’s right’s movement of the 70’s. It strikes me as similar, given that so much emphasis is put on appearance in Korea today, and that photo retouching is nearly a requirement for the pictures that must be included on resumes (!) even today. To me, it’s still shocking that such a thing is still legal.

But back to the point – perhaps women should ask themselves whether wearing high heels every day for years is really worth the pain later? Can’t there be a middle ground? And wouldn’t that make everyone appreciate the specialness of wearing makeup, a high skirt, or skyscraper heels more?

As the article from the Kyunghyang Shinmun says, walking quickly twice a day (preferably NOT in high heels or other constrictive wear!) for 30 mins each time, plus stretching, can keep back problems and other ailments away. Apparently, it has a REALLY big effect, according to the research cited in the news piece. While not news to most of us, how many of us actually do it?

The exercises below help strengthen the back and increase flexibility. What I remember from Coach in high school – hold those positions for a 10-count, then relax! Repeat.

The shoes are equally as tragic. My read on this is the shoes are great if you’re a pole dancer. Now my personal dislike of the shoes aside, if they were worn with something from cocktail party level or up I would have moved on to another celeb in a tragic outfit. However, high heeled, gold, strappy sandals with this boring azz outfit? This is icky.

My repair steps: loose the shirt, add some interesting accessories and even the hooker sandals might have been okay. At least it would have been better than the librarian in stripper shoes.

Now in the grand scheme of things in the fashion universe, I’ve seen much tackier or tasteless outfits. However, it’s really the vibe swirling around the “look at MEEEEEEEEEEEEEE” aura she’s sending out coupled with the REM inducing dullness of what she’s wearing. I think it’s the contrast that’s so offensive. And, if attention is her goal, well she got it. It’s just negative attention.

사강, my dear, hire a new stylist and fire your tailor. The fit on that shirt is horrendous.
