Shinchon.

지난 번에 신촌과 명동의 겨울 패션을 조금 알아봤는데 이젠 많이 추워져서 또 찍었어요! 명동과 신촌에서 많이 찍은 이유는 그런 동네에서 제일 대표적인 한국의 최근 패션 트렌드를 볼 수 있어서요. 신촌은 젊은 애들의 놀이터이며 명동은 (특히 평일 날의 낮에) 좀더 나이가 많은 직장인과 성숙한 여자들의 스타일이라고 생각해요. 이 동네들이 둘다 다영성이 많고 요즘의 많이 나타나타는 거죠.

Although we looked a bit at winter fashions in a recent post, now that it’s colder, I came up with another round of pictures! The reason I shoot so much in Shinchon and Myeongdong is because these two neighborhoods are quite representative of Korean fashion, both in term of the broad range of everyday fashions in each area, along with the fact that Shinchon is a bit younger, while Myeongdong (especially during a workday afternoon) tends a bit more towards the older and more professional.

원래 한국에서는 목도리는 다 파란색이나 빨간색이였잖아요. 이번 시즌까지는 이 만큼 목도리의 다양성을 못 봤어요.

There was a time when all scarves in Korea were basically dark green, blue, or red. I’ve never seen such a diversity of scarves as this winter season.

이번 겨울에 여성 코트는 크고 동글된 칼라가 많이 있고 크고 귀여운 버튼 있는 코트도 많이 볼 수 있네요.

Then there are the coats with the large, rounded collars and big, cute buttons.

그리고 스타킹의 스타일들이 한 2년전쯤부터 많이 다양화 된 거예요. 조금 촌스러운 하트나 리븐 무늬부터 있고 우아하고 컬러플한 스타킹까지. 한 2시즌전부터 유행했던 빤짝빤짝하는 것도었고 그리고 작년쯤부터 여러 색깔로 나온 뚜거운 타이츠도 볼 수 있네요. 정말 옛날의 흑/백/회색으로 나온 것밖에 없었는데 지금 다양성을 갑자기 생긴 거예요.

And stocking styles have also gotten more varied from about two years ago. You’ve got the standard cutesy hearts and ribbons on stockings, classy yet colorful ones, the shiny tights that came into style a couple winters ago, and just colorful tights that hit the streets with a bang from especially last season. This is a big change from the boring black/white/gray options of just a few years ago.

Street Peeps는 우리들의 눈길을 끌고 질문을 던지게끔 호기심을 유발하는 이들을 가리킵니다. 아마도 그의 패션이나 태도 혹은 내면에 숨겨져 있는 뭔가가 느껴지기도 하겠죠. 전철 옆자리나 줄을 서서 대기하는 사람이나 혹은 길거리에서 스쳐 지나가는 이들처럼 우리 주변에는 주목할만한 인물이 많고 우리는 그들에게 말을 건내지 않지만 Street Peeps에서는 이 기회를 붙잡아 여러분들께 보여드립니다. 그들은 우리들의 생각보다 재미있고 특별한 동시에 우리와 비슷한 사람들이라는걸 깨달을 수 있어요.

“Street Peeps” are interesting people who, for some reason, catch our eye and make us want to ask, “Who are you and what do you do?” Perhaps it’s their fashion; perhaps it’s their attitude; often, it’s just a feeling that there’s something under the surface that we want to know about. All around us – sitting next to us on the subway, waiting behind us in line, walking past us in the street – there are fascinating and remarkable people, yet we never stop to talk to them. Well, we do, and we bring them to you.

이 친구들이 밴드 멤버들이 한다고 했는데 아주 패션어블이더라고요. KBS1 카메라맨이랑 막 돌아다니면서 만났던 거예요. 진짜 ‘히피’룩도 있지만 그 것보다 좀 멋진 ‘보히미언’룩도 있었네요. 그리고 홍보포스터도 진짜 화려하고 재밌었네요.

These members of a band whom we bumped into in the playground up there were quite bohemian in a very fashionable way. Layers, scarves, and hats. The young lady had a flyer that was quite trippy, dude.

진짜 친절하고 흥미스러운 사람들이었어요. 그리고 모델을 해주셔서 감사합니다! 역시 홍대는 제일 다양한 스타일이 있네요.

The judges get ready.

디자인콘테스트와 학생패션쇼들이 우리한테 정말 흥미스럽네요. 왜냐하면 학생디자이너들이 아주 젊고 최근 길거리에서 볼 수 있는 드렌드랑 많은 영향을 미치고 있으니까 런웨 무대에서 새로운 디자인들을 표현하면 스트리트패션하고 먼 거리가 아닌 걸 느낄 수 있어요. 또 다른 한편으로는 학생들이 상업적인 이해관계가를 아직 안생긴 거니까 런웨이에서 나오는 디자인들이 좀 실험적인 거예요. 그래서 새로운 아이디어, 신개념을 많이 표현하는 것같아요. 일단 아무래도 재밌는 것들이 많이 나오니까 많이 취재하도록 노력하죠.

밑에는 제39회 중앙디자인콘테스트에서 나온 디자인들 중에 맘에 들거나 재밌는 디자인들이 보여주는 거예요. 이 디자인콘테스트는 아주 유명하고 중요합니다. 1등을 잡는 사람이 성공하는 뉴디자이너를 되기 위해서 많은 돈과 다른 지원을 받아요. 사실 1980년도에 현재 유명한 RUBINA는 이 콘테스트에서 1등을 잡았어요. 현재는 세계 유명한 디자이너로서 젊은 뉴 디자이너를 많이 도와부시는 거죠.

이번에는 SFAA의 마지막 날에 콘테스트가 진행됐는데 재밌는 건 경쟁하는 디자이너의 옷을 입으면서 뒤에 나오는 큰 스크린으로 그 디자이너의 비디오 발표도 나와요. 옷과 비디오를 같이 보면 해석하기 많이 쉬워져요. 근데 쇼를 실제로 봤을 때는 너무 빨리 진행하니까 비디오를 집중하면서 모델의 옷을 자세히 보는 것까지 바라보는 게 좀 어려워요. 사실 사진들을 막 정리하고 편집하면서 이 쇼의 비디오 내용을 보고 스크린이랑 옷을 같이 생각한 거예요. 근데 같이 딱 있는 사진에서 보면은 똑똑하게 해석하는 게 훨씬 더 쉬웠어요. 이 디자인들이 너무 재밌지 않아요?

Design contests and student fashion shows are really fun for us. Because students are younger and more in-the-mix and influence of trends on the street, their fashion interpretations are often more in touch with that. On the other hand, students also tend to be quite experimental and try new things, especially when they are part of an assignment or a theme that they are assigned to design for. Either way, you do get to see some interesting stuff, and we try to cover it.

Here are a few of our favorites from the 39th Joongang Design Contest, which is probably the biggest one for young designers, as the winner gets major support and funding to become a major designer unto him or herself. Indeed, RUBINA herself was selected as the winner of this contest in 1980; now, she’s one of Korea’s most famous designers and helps decide who the winners will be.

This year’s contest happened at the SFAA fashion shows, and was a real joy to watch. Each model is wearing an outfit designed by a single designer who is competing for spots. On the video screen behind each model on the runway is a video presentation for that outfit. It really helps the interpretation, and they’re fun to watch. Unfortunately, the outfits go by so fast that it’s hard to sit back and enjoy them along with the video during the actual show. It was far more intellectually enjoyable while editing or looking at the photos, actually. You have time to digest both the clothes on the model and the stuff happening on the screen in the back. See if you don’t think these are fun:

저번 여름에 홍대에서 만났던 우리 빨간머리 친구를 기억하죠? 보니까 박윤수의 쇼에서 모델로 나와 있을 수 있었겠네요. 길거리에서 런웨이까지 빨간머리는 진짜 불처럼 핫이네! ㅋㅋㅋ

Remember our red-headed friend from Hongdae? Looks like she could have been in the show, too. Red heads are hot, I guess, from the streets to the runways!

저희는 만난지 600백일이 넘은 커플입니다. 지금은 둘다 22살이구요, 초등학교 동창으로. 서로 안면이 있는 사이였습니다. 그러나 연락은 하지않았죠 20살때까지는요 ^^

뭐, 이러면 안되지만 같이 일하는곳에 있는 동생이 남자를 소개시켜 너무 심하게 쫄라서. 제 인맥에 있는 남자들을 샅샅히 뒤졌습니다, 전화번호는 알고있었지만 평생 연락은 안하고 살던 지금의 제 남자친구에게 연락을 했고, 정말 이쁜 아는 동생 소개시켜 준다고 했죠, 그런식으로 해서 자리가 마련되었는데 ~ 그곳에서 모든일이 일어난거죠. 지금의 제 남자친구가 절 오랫만에 봐서 그런진 모르겠지만 처음보는순간 자기 이상형이라고 하더군요. 첫눈에 딱! 알았답니다, 얘는 내꺼다. ..!!

저는 뭐 그런걸 몰랐으니 당연히 소개시켜주는 동생을 밀어주려 애썼고 그러게 그자리는 끝이 났습니다. 그런데 이게 왠일입니까 그다음날 일끝나고 동생과 같이 퇴근을 하는데, 앞에 꽃다발을 들고있는 한남자가 서있더라구요.

We’re a couple that’s met for more than 600 days. We’re both 22, but met back in elementary school, so we knew each other. Still, we didn’t keep in touch over the years, until we were 20.

Well, even though it shouldn’t have happened this way, it all started after a younger friend of mine kept at me about introducing her to a guy. Since I do know a lot of guys from different places in my life, I decided to introduce her to the guy who’s now my boyfriend — I had his contact information, since I already knew him; I just hadn’t gotten in touch with him since we had been kids. So, I called him, and told him that I’d introduce him to a really pretty friend of mine. That’s how everything got started. I don’t know if my present boyfriend had always liked me, when I first laid eyes on him after all these years, I knew he was the one for me. I knew at first sight! Even though I know that sounds corny…

Still, I didn’t do anything about it and went along with pushing my friend in his direction, and left it at that. But then the most surprising thing happened: the next day, while my friend and I were getting off work, there he was, standing right out in front, holding a bouquet of flowers.

저는 우와 동생이 진짜 맘에 들었나 부다, 꽃도 선물받고 ^^ 이렇게 생각하고 있었는데 너무 난처하게도 당황스럽게도 그 꽃을 옆에 동생이아닌 저에게 주는것이었습니다! 장난인줄 알았는데, 아니더라구요. 그자리에서 동생에게 미안하기도하고, 너무 당황스럽기도 했으나. 동생은 이해를 해주더라구요, ㅠㅠ 지금생각하면 미안하지만요.

그렇게 계속적으로 남자애는 애정공세를 해왔고 저도 모르게, 제 마음이 흔들리고 어떨‹š는 두근두근대고, 어떨때는 보고싶기도 했어요. 그래서, 그렇게 저희는 커플이 되었습니다^^ 그래서 지금까지 이렇게 사랑을 지켜왔구요. 앞으로도 계속 지켜나갈 예정입니다. 1년정도 사귀고 남자친구가 군입대를 했는데요. 지금은 벌써 군대입대한지 170일이 되었습니다 ^^

참 신기하게도 첫휴가 나온날^^~~ 저희가 신촌가서 사진두 찍히고 ^^ 너무 기분 좋았습니다.

So I thought, “Wow. He must really like my friend, giving her flowers like that.” That’s what I was thinking when, to my great surprise that left me at a loss for words, he wasn’t giving them to my friend, but to me! I thought he was just kidding, but he wasn’t. Even though I felt really bad about this to my friend. But she was understanding about it. I still feel badly about it when I think about it, though.

After continuing to show how affection like that, at some point, I started to have feelings for him, even to start to miss him when we were apart. That’s the way we became a couple. And we’ve maintained our love all this time, and plan to into the future. After about a year of being together, my boyfriend went into the army. Now, it’s been 170 days since he went in.

It’s really cool that on our first date since he went into the army, and upon going to Shinchon, we had our picture taken together. That really made me feel good.

Anyway, thanks for making a good memory for us.
