We met a lot of people on our trip to Hongdae last week, but the two young ladies we ran into in the park — Ms. Funky on the left and the Ms. Fifties on the right — really left an impression.

홍대에 지난 주말에 갔을 때 너무나 패션어블 사람들을 많이 만나봤는데 놀이터에서 우연히 만났던 이 두 언니들이 너무 특이한 거예요. 왼쪽의 친구는 좀 'funky'스타일이고 오른쪽은 '50년대 보수적인' 스타일의 컨셉이래요.

Wow. The orange-and-yellow checkered corset is cool as all get out, which Ms. Funky on the left said she bought from the clothing store she used to work at, which has since gone out of business. Since it wasn't a big brand item, anyway, it's now pretty much one-of-a-kind. As for Ms. Fifties on the right, we loved her old school hair and makeup, accented with the self-consciously cute, heart-shaped hairpins. Work it, girl!

우와. 오렌지/노란색 체크무늬의 코르셋은 재밌고 본인의 일했던 옷가게에서 샀대요. 근데 그 옷가게는 없어졌으니까 이 건 아주 특별한 거고일단 원래는 특별한 브랜드아니었고. 완전한 '시장 패션'이다! 우리 50년대의 공주의 머리스타일과 화장품을 맘에 드네요. 하트의 모양 머리핀도.

Dizzam. Wow. Jumpin' Jehosophat! Look at those old school, 50's secretarial stockings with the seam. I had a hunch they weren't purchased in Korea, and upon asking, she said that she had indeed purchased them on the Internet. Very nice, very Betty Boop. Or perhaps that would be Bettie Page? You can see a similar look here, which we found in Idae.

와우. 이런 스타킹을 한국에서 구하기 힘든 것같다고 생각해는데 물어보니까 역시 인터넷에서 샀대요. 진짜 Betty Boop을 생각하네. 아니면 Bettie Page? 여기도 이대에서 약간 비슷한 분위기있는 기사를 보지죠.

These two fabulous fashionistas are both into design, are eminently stylish, and are even forming their own band. Can they get much cooler? We do have the feeling we'll see them again, so we'll have to come back and check in on them sometime. And thanks to both of them for taking the time to both pose and answer our barrage of questions! Looking great, ladies!

한국의 스트리트 패션은 다양성이 생기고 있는 거네요. 요즘에 딱 '일본식'이라고 하기 힘든 거고 '미국식'도 말하기 그렇네요. 뭐 압구정으로 내려가면 좀더 미국적 냄새를 날 거예요. 이 여자 3먕을 지나가고 있었는데 너무 화려하게 눈에 띄었기 때문에 사진을 물어볼 수 없을 밖에 없었죠. 너무 '컬러플'과 '여성스러운'과 '도시적 쿨'한 다양한 3가지 룩들이 모여있어서. 일본 스타일이며 잘 한국화를 된 것같고. 뭐 자기 스타일로 만들었죠, 뭐. 일본은 큰 영향이라고 하겠지만 한국식으로 단순화된 것같고 좀터 street-ready스타일로 된 거고요.

Korean street fashion is getting more varied, indeed. These days, the influence of Japan is as present as ever, although perhaps somewhat Koreanized and simplified, I think. Of course, one might say, "Hey! That's just Japanese fashion!" but I think this influence is important to track and is inevitably part of certain Korean looks, just as much as American fashion is a huge influence as well. But I wouldn't simply call Korean fashion "American fashion" warmed over.

그 구두! 뭐랄까! 너무 재밌고 좀 어린 느낌이 나고 이쁜 신호등의 빨간색 신호만큼 교통을 STOP할 수 있는 능력이 있는 것같아요.

The shoes are fabulous, aren't they? Red tights that can stop traffic, with a youthful and playful pair of red-and-white polka-dot shoes. How'd she pull that off?

이 친구는 너무 멋진 액세서리 벨트가 있어요. 배트맨보다 준비되고 있는 패션어블한 사람이네요.반지도 맘에 들고 그리고 티셔츠도. 전쟁 때 무슨 전글에 가도 너무 패션어블하게 생존할 수 있을 것같아요. 멋져!

This girl's got more accessories than Batman's utility belt. Love the rings, the phone, and the t-shirt. She looks like she could survive for three weeks in a wartime jungle and still be able to be coolly accessorized. You're ready for anything, girl!

이 친구도 완전히 다른 룩도 있어요. 그녀도 좀 일본스럽지만 제일 한국수준으로 평범하게 다닐 수 있는 것같아요. 웬지 살짝 섹시하고 귀여운 스타일? 여성스러운 long blouse하고 lace slip과 반스토킹도 신어서 kitten heel이랑 쌀짝 여성스러운 귀여움.

This young lady has a completely different look as well. She's also has a Japanese look, with a girly long blouse, what looks like a lace slip, and the ubiquitous thigh-high stockings, which adds a little "naughty" to her "nice." It adds up to a slightly sexy-cute, and is a somewhat dressed-down Japanese look.

이 여자들을 만나서 방가운 이유는 너무 평범패션하고 자기 자극적인 개인 스타일 사이에 딱 좋은 룩을 잘 키운 거니까 좋았어요. 잘했어요, 당신 멋쟁이 아가씨들아!

I was very happy to meet these young ladies in the street, who seemed to strike a nice balance between everyday fashion and their own edgy, personal styles. Looking good!

이 매력적인 친구는 기차역에서 봤는데 '사진을 찍어도 되냐'고 물어볼까 했는데 다른 파트너들이랑 같이 있었던 거아니었고 너무 피곤했어요. 기차를 타기전에는 물어보기 싫어했단 말이예요. 근데 자리 찾아보니까 앉아 있더라고요.

I first saw this funky young lady while waiting for a train to Seoul, but was too tired to want to ask for a picture, and wasn't with anyone else, so I just didn't have the energy. But when I boarded the train and found my seat, guess who was sitting next to me?

물어보니까 패션쪽에 관심이 많다는 학생이고 홍대에서 멋진 빠에서 알바도 한대요. 그래서 색다른 패션을 만들었군. 진짜 개성이 나오는 거네요. 그렇게 튜브양말을 신고 다니는 걸 처음 봤네요.

Turns out that she's a student very interested and into fashion and works in a cool bar in the Hongdae area. That explains the funky fashion. As well as the personality she's expressing through her clothes. I've never seen tube socks rocked in quite a fashionable yet natural way.

어머나! 엄마야? 언닌가? 영화관에서 나왔는데 멋진 두명을 봤는데 너무 헷갈렸네요. 꼬마랑 있는 사람이 친언니인가? 혹시 어머니? 너무 멋지고 예쁘시니까 그렇게 생각했는데 말을 조심한 거예요. 물어봤더니 어머니다. 어머야. ㅋ

Wow. When we spied this pair coming out of the movie theater in Yongsan, we had to be careful on two fronts: first, we didn't want to ask somebody if they were a mom when they might have been a much older sister, and we worried about how to ask, since we didn't want it to sound like a cheesy line – "Hey, is that your mom or your older sister?" Still, you can see the dilemma.

딸도 멋쟁이 꼬마다. 휴. 나는 30대인데 이렇게 멋도 모르는 놈인데. 초등학생 (6학년)인데 벌써 쿨해보이네요. 엄머니도 '쿨 맘'이구. 와우.

Wow. Even the kid's cool. She's a 6th-grader and already styling. Well, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, as they say. Now, that's a cool mom!

홍대에서 다니고 있었는데 정말 흔미스러운 클러그를 신는 여자를 보게 됐어요. 어떤 건지 너무 많이 궁금해서 어쩔 수 없이 말을 걸었죠.

We were in Hongdae again when we spied a woman wearing the greatest pair of clogs! Clog heels, actually, and they looked too interesting to just pass up.

예쁘죠? 그리고 편해보이고 디테일도 이쁘고. 아주 비싸겠다고 생각했는데 물어보니까 4, 5만원 밖에 안 썼대요. 그리고 이 언니는 어디서 구했는지 기억하다고 하니까 잘 됐네요. 어머! 찾았다!

Nice, huh? Pretty, comfortable, and lots of detailing. We thought they'd be expensive, perhaps $200-300 or so, but she actually remembers them being just $40 or so and she even remembers where she ordered them from! Oh! we found them!

SFAA 패션쇼를 다니면서 밖에 있는 긴 줄에서 만났던 친군데요. 지나가면서 너무 눈에 띈 거예요.

We bumped into this fabulous young lady in the line for the Seoul Fashion Artists Association S/S 2008 Fashion Show, where she was waiting in line, and simply "jumped right into my eye," as they say in Korean.

그 코트는 정글 짱인데 진짜 죽은 동물의 털아니겠지…?

That coat is straight jungle boogie. Fierce! I hope those aren't real dead animals, though…

이 파란색 소녀가 우리 사이트의 대표적인 Fabulous Fashionista의 케이스였어요. 왜냐하면 그 날은 사진을 찍으러 명동으로 간 것도아닌데 그녀 지나다가 딱 그 느낌을 난 거예요: 안물어보면 하루종일 후회할. 코트의 색깔과 모양, 가방, 청바지의 데코레이션, 그리고 부츠는 다 이쁜 거예요. 캐주얼하게 나오신 거지만 아주 잘 생각하신 스타일이죠.

The woman in blue was a classic Fabulous Fashionista, as I was actually not on a shoot, but going to meet a friend. Still, as I passed by, I loved the coat, bag, detailing on the jeans, and the boots. Although casual, she certainly knew how to put her stuff together.

부츠? 좋아. 너무 멋지고 편해보여요. 가방은? 가짜라고 했지만 상관있나? 멋있잖아요. 그리고 그 흔한 누구나 갖고다니는 갈색/흰색 가짜 LV가방아니잖아요. 봤죠? 그냥 LV만 자랑하려고 자기 옷과 스타일하고 전혀 어울리지 않은 그때 그 사람? ㅋㅋ 이 언니는 자연스럽게 자기 스타일하고 맞추는 거예요. 해외여행하는 친구한테 선물로 받았대요. 잘 이용하셨네요!

Love the boots. Classy and comfortable. The bag? Not real Prada, as the lady in blue told me, as she got the bag from a friend who bought it overseas, which she received as a gift. But – who cares? It look good, it's more unique than the ubiquitous brown or white LV fakes on the street, and it doesn't reek of ostentatiousness. In other words, it fits in with her casual look, and the look is working overall in general. A little on the light side with the boots, but hey – matches the detailing!
