The shows are off to a great start, and it’s a good crowd this year. One of my favorite shows from the day was that of Kang Dong-joon’s, whose idea this year was men just looking gangsta. And smoking cigars.

Lee Ju-young’s “Resurrection” was also pretty cool in its relative darkness.

The SFAA collection seems to change the times it shows every year, which is why we almost missed this one — again. We’ve registered as press now for the 3rd time, but they never seem to put us into any database for announcements or anything, even though I’m sure they make them. Then we come and take the best crowd and runway pictures evah. Go figure. Here are some eager younguns posing for the camera as they waited in line between shows. They were great!

It’s almost here again, people! Seoul Fashion Week is almost upon us, coming to the SETEC center (outside of the Hakyeoul subway station on the Orange #3 line), from October 18-25th.

IMG_6028 copy

What is Seoul Fashion Week, you ask? Well, it’s the time, twice a year, usually in late October and late March in Korea’s case, when the hottest and most established designers show together in a display of what’s hot, what’s new, what’s representative of the Korean fashion world. Just like you have New York, Paris, Milan, or Tokyo fashion weeks, Seoul has its own thang going on, too.

IMG_2793 copy

IMG_5429 copy

It is also referred to as the “Seoul Collection” fashion show, but the organizers have very pointedly started to refer to it as “Seoul Fashion Week” from two seasons ago, and really started doing its marketing materials and officially referring to itself exclusively with the term “Seoul Fashion Week” from only last season. Even the season before that, the marketing went out as the “Seoul Collection” fashion show, and there was some confusion in the market about that. But from this time around, it’s “Seoul Fashion Week” with the following season’s time marker.1 So, Seoul Fashion Week S/S 09 is now definitely upon us!

IMG_7959 copy

But is Korean fashion really that hot? Why is the city government pumping so much money into the Seoul Fashion Week lately and why are people in other countries talking about Korean fashion these days? For those new to the high fashion scene, or even Korea itself, this might seem to be a perplexing problem. But to those with a foot inside fashion, or who’ve been in Korea for a long time, things are changing pretty fast, and Korean fashion, whether on the runway or the street, is seeing some pretty monumental changes.

Herald Korean Fashion Wave Copy

We here at FMS have been pretty excited about Korean fashion for a long time — especially street fashion — well before most others were interested in it. In fact, when this magazine started in July 2006, we were the only people taking street photographs of normal Korean people, tracking trends, and trying to match them up to what was also coming down the Korean runways, as well as the influences that were streaming in through the Internet from other countries.

In August of 2007, we boldly (and rashly?) declared that year “Year Zero” for Korean fashion, at least in terms of when people would look back and try to point to the beginning of a “Korean fashion wave.” Now that things are starting to heat up considerably more in 2008, it’s a pretty interesting prediction. Still, it was from around 2005-2006 that there seemed to be a sea change on the Korean streets, in terms of a sudden explosion of various fashions and more individualistic expressions of style.

Sure, newbies to both Korean fashion and/or Korea might pooh-pooh the conformity that still does and always will exist to some extent in Korean fashion (and general) culture, but compared to the times of uniform black, white, and gray that was only sometimes broken by muted primary colors on jackets or a few accessories — it was like a Cambrian explosion in fashion evolutionary terms. If you remember your Darwin, it’s not a singular forward step taken by a pre-selected few that drives evolution forward, but rather the sheer numbers of various types, styles, peculiar mutations, and random permutations that makes for evolutionary progress. And that evolutionary explosion, with more and more variety of style on the streets, with people feeling free to really push the boundaries and try wilder things, that make the fashion environment here better for everyone. It is in such an environment that a “Korean wave” (for film) or a “Korean fashion wave” are able to happen.

But before we get all carried away, it’s time to go back even further. You gotta go back to history. Translated in from the Seoul Fashion Week web site (which is much improved over previous seasons, but still has very little information available in English, unfortunately), we translate their brief history of Korean high fashion for you here:

 Html Images Img Fashionshow

1954 — Korea’s first fashion show ever is held.
According to Madame Nora Noh (who is recognized as Korea’s first fashion designer), the first fashion show ever held in Korea takes place in the Chosun Hotel.

1961 — All fashion events are officially suspended.
Although fashion shows were held several times a year from the first fashion show held in 1954, after the coup and establishment of Pak Chung Hee’s military government, fashion shows are branded a “archetypical luxury” and became impossible to stage.

1987 — Real fashion shows.
With the coming of the 1980’s, the mass popularization of fashion had begun, and with the June 29, 1987 Declaration (which revised the Constitution and ended military dictatorship), genuine fashion shows could be held and the fashion culture begins to develop at a rapid pace.

1990 — Regular fashion shows.
As Korea entered the 1990’s, the country sees the opening of regular fashion shows, first in Seoul, of course, but also in the larger cities of other regions.

Things are very different today.

As with almost everything in Korea, the hard and fast changes taking place in terms of war, military dictatorship, economic development plans, and the huge upsurge of disposable income in the late 1980’s and the advent of a powerful consumer culture in the 1990’s all made up the background for the beginning of real growth of a consumer fashion industry in Korea. Of course, Korea had been a leader in the production and export of textiles to other countries, but it wasn’t until the more comfortable and consumption-oriented late 1980’s and 1990’s (when people had extra money and the disposition to spend it) that fashion itself started to occupy the minds of everyday people, and high fashion could start occupying the time of professional designers.

Again translated from the Seoul Fashion Week web site, here’s a background history of the Seoul Collection (Seoul Fashion Week) itself:

Fostering of the Cities that Promote the Western Fashion Industry and the Guiding of Trends
Paris, Milan, New York, London, and other advanced cities deliberately foster and support the progress of their fashion industries through the collections of international designers and the trends they create, and thereby are the leaders of the international fashion world.

The Push for East Asian Cities to Become Future Fashion Capitals
After the 1990’s, Tokyo, Beijing, and Hong Kong, along with other east Asian cities, all began to strive to make their cities into future fashion capitals through the promotion of fashion collections and products produced in their own countries. Tokyo has already become one of the world’s five largest fashion shows.

Overcoming Our Weaknesses and Fostering Seoul’s Becoming a World Fashion Capital
Although it is a fact that Korea is possessed of excellent materials, the talent of our country’s distinguished designers, along with unparalleled sewing and dressmaking skills, has received little recognition due to our image as a manufacturer and supplier of cheaper raw materials. Therefore, the high value and potential of the Korean fashion remains unfulfilled. With the intense efforts of the designers of SFAA, KFDA, NWS3 and other designers who continued to hold their individual collections and shows, as well as the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s drive to develop Seoul into an Asian fashion capital, and for the sake of improving the image of the Korean fashion industry while insuring its competitiveness, it was decided to hold a joint fashion event to better position Seoul as an international fashion collection.4 From October 2000, the jointly-held Seoul Collection (Seoul Fashion Week) exhibitions received the formal support of the Seoul Fashion Center, Korean Fashion Association, and other bodies working under the auspices of the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

Now, let us fill in some of the blanks here. Below we offer an interview with one of the pillars of Korean fashion — RUBINA — and also head of the Seoul Fashion Artists Association (SFAA). She’s a crucially important figure in Korean fashion, and was the subject of our very first FMS interview. Our lack of knowledge in the interview is a bit embarrassing, but we were new and learning. And since there are almost no materials available in English, along with the fact that since these people are already known to Korean fashion people, there are few explanations as to who is important and why, it was hard to do any homework for the show. In this, our first FMS interview, we simply asked the staff to introduce us to a very important designer who could break it all down for us. This interview comes from the SFAA S/S 08 show (and is part of an ongoing-but-flagging series on Korean fashion designer profiles that we are going to continue), which RUBINA was running. The information she gives is very useful and fills in a lot of the details gaps that exist from the general overview above:

Later, at Seoul Fashion Week F/W 08, we got to meet Hwang Jae Bock (황재복), who is a quite famous wedding designer and also happens to be the head of the Seoul Fashion Designers Association (SFDA). She provided a lot of information about the new direction and priorities in Korean fashion, and how seriously they’re taking the initiative to globalize Korean fashion and really take it to the next level.

We here at FMS hope this information has been helpful, and would like to see as much information about Korean fashion printed in English as possible. This is probably the first comprehensive historical overview of Korean fashion available in English, and we would like to add more documents and materials like this in the future. We also hope that the Seoul City Government will be able to more wisely spend its resources by simply translating some key materials into English and making them readily available to the non-Korean public. While it is great that there is more of an effort being made to promote Korean fashion abroad, the fact remains that there is almost no material available about Korean fashion in English AT ALL.

busman

But we’re making it, and we’re going to continue leading the cause to promote Korean fashion by doing the research, making the translations, and helping to create the body of knowledge that those outside of Korea desperately want and need. If the materials exist, then others can use to promote, help buyers, and spread the word.

Perhaps we’ll become a part of Korean fashion history ourselves!

  1. For you fashion world newbies, “S/S” means “Spring/Summer” and “F/W” means “Fall/Winter,” and if a show is actually held during the fall of 2008, the convention is to call it a fashion week for S/S 2009, the next season, for which they’ll be showing clothes at the shows. []
  3. Seoul Fashion Artists Association, Seoul Fashion Designers Association, and New Wave in Seoul, respectively []
  4. And yes, the original Korean sentence was just as convoluted as the translated English version. []

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening."

What is STYLE?

"Fashions fade, style is eternal.”

What is SEXY?

"Darling, the legs aren't so beautiful, I just know what to do with them."

--- Marlene Dietrich (1901–1992)

What is TALENT?

"I was asked to act when I couldn't act. I was asked to sing 'Funny Face' when I couldn't sing, and dance with Fred Astaire when I couldn't dance - and do all kinds of things I wasn't prepared for. Then I tried like mad to cope with it.”

---Audrey Hepburn (1929-1993)
