Sex and the City, An Illustrious finale

4년 만입니다. 아쉬운 석별의 정을 나눴던 그녀들이 다시 돌아왔습니다. 캐리, 사만다, 샬롯, 미란다. 각각 성 칼럼니스트, 홍보 이사, 화랑 딜러, 변호사라는 화려한 타이틀을 걸고 뉴욕을 활보했던 매력적인 그녀들. 특히 주인공 캐리 역의 ‘사라 제시카 파커’는 이 드라마를 통해 전 세계 여성들의 트랜드 세터로 자리매김했죠. 캐리와 친구들의 끈끈한 우정과 쉽게 찾아오지 않는 진정한 사랑에 대한 갈증은, 또한 여성들의 공감을 이끌어내는데 충분했습니다. 그런 그녀들과의 해후라니! 그야말로 기대 반, 걱정 반입니다.

It’s been four years. The women are back after having said good bye to the TV audience. Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda, each with their own dazzling careers as a “Sex and the City” columnist, a publicist, an art dealer, and a lawyer - used to positively strut down the streets of New York City. This is especially true for Sarah Jessica Parker, as Carrie has established herself as a trendsetter for every woman in the world through this TV show. Their thirst for true love that never comes easily and the strong bonds among Carrie and her friends made it possible for the female audience to be drawn to the show by showing the way women can bond with one another. Now, they’re back again! I’m half-worried and half-excited about their return.

러닝 타임 2시간 17분. 길지만 꽤 유쾌한 시간이었습니다. 나이를 먹어도 여전히 매력적인 그녀들을 보는 것도 즐거운 일이고요(뭔가 나도 그럴 수 있을 거란 쓸데없는 희망이 소복소복 올라오더군요). 패션의 끝을 보고픈 당신과 진정한 사랑에 목마른 당신, 명품을 사랑하는 당신과 친구들과의 수다가 피로회복제인 당신도 실컷 웃으며 즐길 수 있는 시간입니다.

The film runs for 2 hours and 17 minutes. It’s quite long, but still has a certain charm. It’s pleasant to see the four characters still look gorgeous even as they age (I’m also captivated by the hope that I will be just as fabulous when I grow old.) And yes, if you are looking forward to seeing fashion showcased on the big screen, searching for true love, or alternatively, want to see a string of high-profile brands, or want to chitchat forever with friends to let off stress, you will be intrigued throughout the whole running time of the film.

거기에 잘난 남자들이 줄줄이 나오는 건 영원한 보~너스죠! 다행히 노쇠하신 미스터 빅은 자제하시니 걱정 마세요. 사만다의 이성을 마비 시키는 뇌쇄적인 매력 남의 등장은 여성 관객의 시선을 꽤나 의식한 듯 싶어요. 기대하시라~, 물 흐르는 듯한 이쁜 근육과 아슬아슬한 화면 처리를. 유후~.

Male hotties in the film are also a big “bonus” here, too. Fortunately, Mr. Big doesn’t overact here - so you don’t have to worry about him. Then there’s a hot “Mr. McSteamy” that paralyzes all Samantha’s senses. This new guy is definitely eye candy for the females in the audience in a blatantly obvious way. His well-formed muscles combined with a few key, tantalizing edited cuts are oh, so irresistible.

이렇듯 맛난 요소들로 무장한 것을 보면 대박 흥행을 노린 것이 분명할 진데, 아쉬운 것은 그걸 좀 뻔~하게 드러내고 있다는 거죠. ‘결단코 흥행하고 말 테다!’ 외치는 꼴 이랄까요. 드라마에서 보여주던 우정과 사랑, 인생에 대한 고민은 한 발짝 뒤로 물러난 채, 화려한 피날레를 장식하는데 여념이 없습니다. 그러다 보니 뭔가 앞뒤가 안 맞는 느낌까지 들게 만들지요. 한~참 이야기하다 보니 내가 맨 처음에 뭘 이야기하려 했나 깜빡깜빡 하신 달까요.

This movie is definitely looking to be a big smash at the box office, along with the help of the attractive features above. However, I am afraid to say that the way it reveals them is quite banal - the film seems to shout “I’m going to the top of the box office!” The movie-version of Sex and the City is so obsessed with wrapping up the story for the sake of a “wondrous finale” that it neglects what the TV-show Sex and the City did with the sensible ways it dealt with friendship and love, as well as the life of these four “fabulous” women. Consequently, the film feels like it’s being bogged down by storylines that don’t quite seem right. The plot will continue in a certain direction, but finally stop when it realizes that it forgot what it really wanted to say.

예를 하나 들어보죠.(‘나 이 영화 볼 건데?’ 하시는 분들. 스포일러 나갑니다. 다음 단락으로 고고씽 하시고요.) 캐리는 홍보 자료에서 어마어마한 웨딩 드레스 패션을 살짝 공개했는데요. 예상하신 대로 미스터 빅과 결혼식을 올립니다. 그런데 그녀가 맨 처음 고른 웨딩 드레스는 좀 엉뚱합니다. 보세 투피스를 입고 결혼 하겠다는 그녀에게 샬롯도 어리둥절해할 정도죠. 뭐, 나름 예쁘긴 했습니다만. 평소에 입던 옷들이 더 예뻐 보여서 차라리 갖고 있는 옷 중에 하나 골라 입었음 싶은 생각이 살짝 들더군요. 게다가 그 옷 입고 진정한 행복을 찾습니다, 란 결말은 대체 뭐 어쩌란 건지… 홍보 자료로 자랑하던 드레스는 어데로 가고? 멕시코의 고급 리조트로 날아가 사랑의 아픔을 달래는 그녀들에게 도저히 어울리는 결말이 아닙니다.

One example has to do with Carrie’s wedding dress. The PR campaign before the film came out Carrie exposed us to her breathtaking wedding dress fashion. She gets married to Mr. Big, as we all already expected. But the first wedding dress she picks is somewhat awkward. She decides to get married in her two-piece everyday dress that she found at a flea market, a fact that even surprises Charlotte. That was not a bad choice, but she would have been better dressed in one of the many fabulous outfits from her closet. But then the film concludes that Carrie discovers true happiness wearing that ordinary dress to her wedding. This was such an embarrassing ending considering the whole set of stunning wedding dresses shown off in the PR materials. It also doesn’t seem to be a suitable ending for four women who fly to an upscale resort in Mexico to soothe the pains of broken hearts.

이건 구찌 드레스 케이스를 열어보니 입던 보세 옷이 들어있는 것과 같은 상황이죠. 선물한 당사자는 잔뜩 뿌듯해서는 말합니다. ‘입어보면 너도 그 진가를 알 거야.’ 입어보고 알 수 있는 거면 구찌에 넣어둔 연유가 무어냐고. 화려한 인생에 눈 멀고 귀 멀게 만들어 놓고, 진짜 사랑은 화려함과는 상관 없소~ 라고 외치면 허무해질 수 밖에요.

It feels like finding a cheap, off-the-rack clothes in a Gucci dress case. The person who gives that present might brag, “You will know the real value once you wear it.” But if you really think that I will find the “real value” when I put it on, you don’t have to bother wrapping it in a Gucci bag. It doesn’t make sense, after having become absorbed in the fabulous lifestyles of these four women, for the film to conclude that true love actually has nothing to do with fabulosity.

또한 시즌 6까지의 장기 집권 체제 하에 만족했던 이들은 한 시즌을 우겨 넣은 듯한 영화를 보며 좀 당황할 수도 있을 겁니다. 그러면서도 러닝 타임이 좀 짧았으면 어땠을까 싶은 아이러니까지 머릿속을 복잡하게 할 테니까요.

Moreover, the film feels a little overly-squeezed as a movie wrapping up a six-season-long TV show. But I was also tempted to imagine how the film would have been if it were shortened more.

하지만 이런 아쉬운 점들을 감안한다면 영화 섹스 앤 더 시티는 제법 만족스러운 선택일 거라 생각됩니다. 사랑과 사람을 진지하게 고민하던 캐리의 목소리는 작아졌지만, 섹스 앤 더 시티가 가진 반짝 반짝한 느낌만은 잃지 않았으니까요. 화려한 뉴욕의 생활과 유쾌한 수다 속에 느껴졌던 동경과 부러움. 그 반짝임은 빛을 잃지 않았으니 안심하시라~.

But for all its final flaws, the film Sex and the City was pretty fun to watch. Though Carrie, whose voice of loud concern about love and human relationships has been toned down in the movie, the allure of Sex and the City has not diminished. You can still enjoy yourself envying and vicariously participating in the illustrious New York City life and benefitting from the witty banter of these four familiar characters.

그러니 4년의 기다림이 무색하지 않으려면 진지한 고민은 잠시 접어두고 그녀들의 유쾌함에 마음을 맡겨보는 것도 좋을 것 같군요. 캐리가 잘나신 미스터 빅(이 남자는 왜 이리 밉상인지!)과 정말 행복할 수 있을 지, 샬롯의 아이는 얼마나 예쁠 지, 사만다는 과연 한 남자에게 안착할 수 있을 지, 미란다는 주부 라이프를 즐길 수 있을 지 같은 소소한 궁금증을 풀다 보면, 이 영화와 함께 한 시간이 아깝지 않을 테니까요. ‘여성의 로망을 충족하고야 말겠소!’ 라고 외쳐주는 이 영화. 내내 즐기시기를~!

So it’d be not that bad to put aside our concerns for a while and go for the refreshment that these four “gorgeous” women represent to us. You should keep an eye out for whether Carrie will be truly happy with uppity Mr. Big (I still don’t like him, though!), how pretty Charlotte’s baby will be, if Samantha can settle down with just one guy, and if Miranda can enjoy herself as a housewife. With all this in mind, you will not waste your time watching the movie. Have fun watching this film, which still maintains the aim of fulfilling all women’s yearning for “romance.”
