Believe it or not, I used the same lens as you bought a while ago -- the Canon 10-22 EF-S. In such a setting, it's VERY dark, but the thing about club photography is that you get occasional bursts of light, making everything super bright. Basically, I shoot at 800 or 1600 (although I try not to shoot 1600 as much as possible) and use a powerful flash -- the 580 EX.

The trick is to use an external power pack for the flash, which keeps me going for an entire night with barely a hiccup. The external flash battery pack is the key for lots of flash shooting with no interruption.

Still, even though the 10-22 isn't the brightest lens, I need the width. Makes for a lot higher ratio of missed shots, though, so you have to shoot a lot. For that night, I got a 4gig card, and am going to get another one. Strangely enough, I think that high hit/miss ration pushes me to be a bit more careful and concentrate more, like back in the film days, which weren't too long ago for me. You can't just point-and-shoot in an environment like that and constantly need to be thinking in order to pull off any kind of decent shots.

People ask me why I'm doing so much club shooting these days, and besides the obvious answers of it being free, there being lots of girls, and also that club kids tend to be the most fashion-forward and the setters of trends, photographically, it's one of the most technically challenging photographic situations I can put myself in these days.

Great pictures. What lens and lighting did you use in such a dark setting?
