2주일전에 이번 봄 시즌의 첫 따뜻한 토요일 밤에 홍대로 갔었는데 사람들이 진짜로 뭘 입고 다니는지 어떤 트렌드 정말로 표현하게 되고 있는지 한번 보러 왔어요. 왜냐하면 요즘에 홍대는 그냥 한가지의 스타일이나 룩이 된 것아니라 정말 서울의 패션 중심이 된 거예요. 다른 동네보다 패션 룩의 범위가 아주 넓으며 유행 옷부터 펑크, 야한 클러브 옷부터 남자친구를 만날 때 얌전한 드레스까지, 미국/일본 그리고 한국스러운 옷도 다 보일 수 있거든요.

Two weeks ago, I took a walk through Hongdae on a Saturday night, and the first real warm night of spring. I just wanted to see what people were really wearing, and looking for anyone who caught my eye. Hongdae has truly become one of the most interesting fashion centers of Seoul, since it has such a variety of styles, encompassing everything from prevalent trends to punk, from the most risque to the most conservative, from American, Japanese, to the most Korean looks.

노란색 코트를 입는 여자를 봤는데 너무 색깔과 디자인 좋아서 잡았어요. ‘Earth tone‘으로(연한 회색에서 검은 갈색에 이르는 난색조) 코디 되게 잘한 거네요. 노란색이랑 초록색과 칼색. 웬지 이 친구의 피부색이랑 어울린 것같았어요. 아 - 그리고 내가 실수해서 어쩔 수없이 포샵에서 조금 컨닝해야 했어요. 그래서 색감이 조금 이상하죠. 미안!

I saw the flash of yellow and soon had my first catch of the day! I liked the yellow, the green, and brown earth tones. The colors also seemed to match her skin tone well. I was having a bit of trouble with the flash, so I cheated a bit with Photoshop to save this picture.

우리 사이트의 믿음대로 ‘패션이 길거리부터 시작된다’고 하는데 맞는 말같죠? 이 재밌는 반스타킹은 웬지 그냥 캐주얼 양말의 느낌이라 더 좋았던 것같아요.

You know that fashion starts from the bottom, and she had great stockings — I liked the way they bunched up and kind of looked more like tube socks than real thigh-highs. It made the look more casual.

와우. 그 보우타이를 너무 마음에 든다. 그리고 그 교복식 나온 자켓도 (두타아닌가?). 코디를 진짜 창조적으로 한 거네요.

OK. I love the bow tie. I recognize the Dongdaemun Doota-brand “schoolgirl” jacket, which is popular. But coordinating it with the bow tie — nice move.

놀이터에서 평범한 3가지 스타일인데 뭔가 평범하지 않은 것같았어요. 왼쪽에서 얌전함, 캐주얼함, 화려함이 — 다 한 사진에서 나오네요. 그리고 가운데 친구의 ‘모나리사 미소’도 좋았어요.

These three girls in the park are pretty everyday styles, but I like how the three friends cover demure, casual, and sporty styles all in one shot. Also, the girl in the middle’s “Mona Lisa smile” added a nice touch to the picture.

오예. 이번 시즌은 컬러플이죠. 밤에 썬글래스? 오예!

This song is the shit, right? The 80’s are truly back, and they were never cooler.

한국에서는 “고트”이란 패션을 많이 못 봤는데 진짜 잘했더라고요. 그리고 뭐 생각이 드냐면 일본의 언더그라운드 패션 문화는 아주 자극적인데 한국에서는 아무래도 일반 길거리에서 입을 수 있는 것같아요. 물론 낮에 어디 사무실에서 입는 스타일아니지만 밤에 홍대에서 보면은 웬지 딱 어울리는 느낌? 진짜 멋졌어요.

The “Goth light” crew. You don’t see much Goth or other underground cultures much in Korea, and when you do, they’re not nearly as extreme as in Japan. Although you probably couldn’t wear this look to the office, it somehow seems pretty normal when it comes to one night in Hongdae.

근데 홍대에서 나가면서 찍기 어려운 한국의 대표적인 여성스러운 스타일. 많은 이렇게 귀엽고 여성스러움의 포인트로 나온 친구들이 활영허락을 잘 안해주거든요. 이 친구들한테 친절한 협조를 해주니까 진짜 고마웠네요!

As I left Hongdae, I bumped into two young ladies sporting the demure, more feminine styles that are so hard to get people to pose in. Understandably, the girls rocking this kind of style tend to be a bit more conservative, and generally turn down requests for a picture.

이 사진으로 마칠게요. 막지막 완전히 다른 스타일이고 — 섹시한 스타일부터, 고트으로, 얌전한 룩까지 — 진짜 홍대에서는 다양한 패션이 있네요. 그리고 홍대에서는 다양한 사람들이 있을수록 친절한 사람들도 많아요. 마지막 사진으로 이런 친절한 미소로 끝나면 기분이 좋죠?

We were really happy to get these two young ladies on camera, and it they were a a good way to end this trip through Hongdae. And it’s always good to end with such a nice smile, no?
