For the first time ever, Seoul has started formally referring to its former “Seoul Collection Fashion Show” by the more confident-sounding title of “Seoul Fashion Week”, along the lines of other respected cities holding shows around the world. The act of doing so not only indicates a real and palpable increase in international interest in Korean fashion, but also signals a crucial shift towards a self-conscious intention to actively gain more attention in a purposeful and more organized way. The last time such a convergence between international recognition and institutional self-awareness happened, it ended up being called a “wave.” Now, history repeats itself as some (perhaps as over-optimistically as in the past) have started talking about a “Korean fashion wave.”

전반적으로 패션 의식적인 한국 사람들이 국제적 트렌드를 만나자 한국은 주목해야 할 패션 hotspot이 되었다. 나는 이것을 사람들이 “dressed to kill”하도록 요구되는 형식성과 너무 튀면 안 된다는 유교적인 보수성의 결합에 의한 결과라고 정리한다. 이 유교적 보수성은 지속적으로 한국 패션을 한정하는 요소로써 최근 들어 지난 몇 년간 인터넷으로부터 비롯된 새로운 패션들에 의해 변형되고 있다고 생각한다. 이러한 이유로, 한국 거리는 눈에 띄게 “ready-to-wear”한 것이다.

As the overall fashion-consciousness of the Korean people meets international trends, Korea is becoming a fashion hotspot to watch. I chalk it up to a combination of an required formality that keeps people “dressed to kill,” tempered by a Confucian social conservatism that keeps the extremes in check, a constant limiting tendency that has been pushed and stretched recently by the new looks now coming through the Internet over the last few years. For this reason, the look of the Korean street is distinctively pret-a-porte, or “ready-to-wear.”

대조적으로 일본 패션은 꽤 특이하고 개성있다, 어쩌면 너무 심할 정도로… 일본에서는 적절한 사회적 한정선이 한국과는 다른 것 같다. 그래서 일본에서는 패션이 이쪽 저쪽 모든 방면으로 튈 수 있도록 허용이 되나 보다. 따라서, 대부분의 일상적인 일본 패션이 튀는면으로는 조금 더 couture 쪽에 가까운 것 같고 일본 밖에서는 전혀 일반화 될 수 없는 패션 문화 같다.

By contrast, Japanese fashion is quite peculiar and unique — perhaps too much so. In Japan, the social limitations don’t seem to work the same way as they do in Korea, as they allow fashion to wend and bend into all sorts of directions, to all kinds of extremes. Accordingly, much of everyday Japanese fashion seems more “couture” in terms of its sheer wildness, and the many fashion subcultures for which Japan is famous are not generalizable anywhere outside of Japan.

한국의 특이한 입장은 오늘날 국제적인 스타일과 겹치는 그저 새로운 옷 트렌드를 내놓았다기 보다는 개성있는 진정한 한국 스타일을 정의한다. 이것은 서울 거리가 국제적 트렌드를 따르지 않는다는게 아니라, 다시 말해서 현존하는 트렌드, 또 세계적인 패션 영향이 한국의 특이한 상태와 만나서 생긴 결과물이다. 이로 인해 서울에 대한 관심이 급증하였다. 지난 20여년 동안만해도 따로 따로 전시하다가 2주 전에 여러 디자인 단체들이 힘을 합쳐서 처음으로 하나의 “서울 패션위크”을 선 보인 것으로 알 수 있듯이 말이다.

Indeed, Korea’s unique position has produced not just a new clothing trend that happens to presently overlap with international tastes, but rather, defines a truly unique Korean style. This does not mean that the Seoul streets are immune from international trends, but again, is the result of contemporary trends and influences around the world coming together within a unique Korean condition. This has resulted in a lot more attention being paid to Seoul, as was the case just this last season, when several design associations joined together for the first time to hold a single “Seoul Fashion Week” instead of the separate exhibitions that have gone on for nearly two decades now.

Now, with the support of the Seoul Metropolitan Government (the mayor made a point of attending a show as the city renewed its support for Korean design associations and the promotion of Korean fashion abroad), it is easy to imagine Seoul being mentioned along with Tokyo, Milan, Paris, and New York within a few years, and for people around the world to be as concerned with what everyday Koreans are wearing as much as the clothes that top Korean designers are producing.

이 모든 결합이 일어나면 진정한 “한류 패션”으로 불릴 것이다. 그 때는 세계적으로 사람들이 진짜로 서울 사람들이 입는 옷과 안 입는 옷에 대해 말하기 시작할 것이기 때문이다, 어쩌면 부산까지도? 누가 알겠는가? 1998년에 한국이 실력 있는 새로운 감독과 영화의 주요 원산지일 것을 그 누가 상상조차 했을까?

When all this convergence happens, it will surely be called a “Korean fashion wave,” as people from all over the world start taking real notice of what people are and aren’t wearing in Seoul and perhaps even other cities. Who knows? Would anyone have thought of Pusan as a major source of hot new directors and films way back in 1998?

지난 몇 년간 이 모든 변화들이 한국 거리에서 암시적으로 일어났다. 하지만, 한국 패션의 fabulousness는 – 한국 대중이 어떻게 해석하고, 전달하고, 정의시키는지에 따라 – 중앙 정부 기획, 패션 산업의 바램, 그리고 상업화 조차로 만들어지고 좌우될 수가 없다. 이러한 요인들은 그저 어떠한 “패션 물결”이 일어날 수 있도록 도울 뿐, 모든게 한국인들이 매일 거리에서 무엇을 입느냐에 따라 시작하고 끝이 나는 것이다.

All these changes have been taking place on the Korean streets over the last few years, occurring in a telltale pattern. Yet, the fabulousness of Korean fashion — in terms of how the Korean public is interpreting, transmitting, and actually defining it with their own bodies — cannot be created or controlled by central government planning, the desires of fashion industry elites, or even the dictates of commercialism. Those factors can help quicken any “fashion wave” into reality, but everything still begins and ends with what everyday Koreans are wearing on the street.
