fashion is fetish is fabulous is fun is fantastic!
OK, let’s talk straight for a minute. And because I’m not Korean, I might have some objectivity on this. I do like Korean popular culture, and know something about it, otherwise I wouldn’t be part of this magazine, but I do have an outside perspective that allows me to not get sucked up into trends and “waves” less easily.
So, I’m just gonna say it: the Wonder Girls have no talent. None. Oh, come on. Don’t get mad. Just think about it objectively for a minute. They can’t sing AT ALL and they can’t dance to SAVE THEIR LIVES. Do you remember their first live performance of “Tell Me”? It was terrible. Horrible. I’m scarred for life. On my eyes. And not using Michael Jackson or someone as the standard, because Korea has enough good dancers to compare with, from all the way back to Seo Taiji and the Boys to Boa and Lee Hyori. They can at least perform decent dances. But what is all this “shaky shoulder dance” crap? So they wiggle suggestively in sync? Whoa – what a concept. *I* can do that, and I’m in my mid-thirties with a gut. I just have to channel my old Kid-n-Play/MC Hammer moves made in front of the TV, but if you give me a few minutes and the motivation, I CAN do the Wonder Girls dance. And what’s with them being 14 Western age? That’s just pervy, dude, since the two 14-year-olds LOOK 14. We’re not talking Britney at 17 with the tongue-in-cheek schoolgirl video – we’re talking Jodi Foster in Taxi Driver with the disturbingly bad makeup job. Eww.
But now, we have a Wonder Girls dance “wave”? Nooo. Not another “wave.” And for what? Some rejects from an audition for the Doosan cheerleaders now working as street dancers opening a Paris Baguette could do the “Tell Me” dance better than the Wonder Girls. Has Korean pop culture really gotten so bad? There isn’t anyone more talented who can be on stage during prime time? This is it?
And what’s more, now we have announcers on variety shows following along to the dance for fun and showing up IN THE NEWS for doing it. Why? Let it die.
The real problem is that the flavor-ful JYP, who created this dance and the Wonder Girls, has that dance performed by said Wonder Girls, who are flavor-less and haven’t even finished puberty yet. I’m supposed to care about them shaking their ass around? Check out the originator doing it, who is getting on to his 40’s and was in his prime in the 90’s. And he’s a dude. Yet, he still pulls it off better than these “Wonder Girls”, who are anything BUT a wonder:
여기는 비의 뉴욕의 공연할 때 비의 쉬는 사간에 짬깐 나온 JYP의 모습. 그리고 JYP는 아저씨잖아.
Here, you get a sampling of JYP’s best moves, as performed when Rain was resting in between shows, and which JYP was probably just doing as practice to keep in the game. Now, THIS is someone who can dance:
밑이는 JYP아닌데 그의 춤을 추는 거야. 잘. 일반인인데.
Below, even though it’s not JYP, it’s his dance, and you can see how it stands on its own, as performed by someone with some skill:
내가 하고 싶은 말이 뭐냐고? 쉽게 말해줄께. 원더걸스는 춤을 못춘다. 그리고 그 춤같이 않은 춤을 똑같이 출려고 하는 사람들이 좀 옷긴 단 말이야. JYP는 그 춤을 만들었는데 JYP의 기준으로 봐야 되는 거아니야? 그리고 한국에서는 노래 적당하게 잘할 수 있고 춤을 출 줄 아는 여자들이 없나? 휴. 안탑깝다.
So, my point? I’ll make it simple. The Wonder Girls can’t dance. And watching people who can’t even perform the dance that even the original stars can’t dance right to doesn’t do anything for me. And before you say I’m too harsh on the Wonder Girls, let me just say that since JYP made both the dance and THEM, he’s the logical standard of comparison. The way it should be, is the girls should have made the dance sexy and their own, while JYP remains funny and charming doing it for fun sometimes on stage. As it is, he’s much better than his protegées, who are about as sexy as the middle school girls I see in uniforms walking down the street every day. Eww.

I don’t feel so alone with my dislike of the Wonder Girls anymore…
It’s a painful experience watching them. One of them in particular, So Hee, is much less talented than the others and I don’t understand how people could devote their attention to someone who can’t sing nor dance just because they’re “cute”. It’s scary how old these girls are, most of them still in high school and doing sexy dances (like the routine to Irony). Uh, Lolita, anyone?
Now this Song is really stupid. But the most the terrible thing is that any song of that kind seems to have that catchy melody/hookline. Still back in Germany (I left about one week ago) I’m being hauted by that song uarghh.
But thanks anyway for bringing me back (although not the best) memories of my recent Korea trip
FMS rocks, btw
Talent matters not…it’s the thought that counts.
Yah.. you might give props to JYP, but he did create the Wonder Girls. And he’s probably hoping for an SES/Finkl length career from these girls. It’s all about the money, and beyond being a great entertainer, JYP is a savvy businessman.
Is it wrong that I agree that the girls are too young, can’t sing or dance and I’m still totally fascinated by them anyways? It’s more the potential, okay, fine, it’s cos I like JYP’s songwriting and production, I just sort of tolerate them. I see the girls as being more cyphers than anything else. And the Korean entertainment industry (or Korea generally) rarely seems to award talent so much as effort. 수고하시면 능력은 필요 없다 (unfortunamente)~ And so many of these idol groups are about image and entertaining generally versus performing as musicians.
My fave girl group is actually British though–Girls Aloud. They are the BEST. Way better than the Spice Girls, but Girls Aloud has the power of Xenomania on their side
I don’t think its wrong. It just means that you might be one of those people who linger or slow down when arriving upon an accident. I don’t care for them either, but as a friend of mine said, “American gave us New Kids on the Block! You not throw stone.” He’s right. I would be hard pressed to come up with a winner between WG and NKOTB.
Well… I do agree with the ‘fact’ they cannot sing… But! I like ‘them’! Totally reversing the recent trend, Wondergirl actually created new ‘boom’ or was it JYP? I do not care if people call it stupid… The song is easy and have a power to make people ‘addicted’ to it! And it’s fun to watch and do what they do!!
i do like that little move they make but i feel sorry for them at the same time. i gues they have fame now but are they really doing what they want to do? or doing what they are told to do?
it is addictive as SparQeen said and fun to watch also.
okay… i think you guys dont have to make a forum for this.. grow up! okay? if you dont like it, just live with it. anyways, what are you t rying to do with this forum?? get as many comments so you can sue them or what?
YOU GUYS, just because they cant dance well or not, i think you guys are jealous. i think you guys think they are getting all that attention for “nothing” and you think you can do better yet you are not famous. Yesterday i watched this TV show (in korea) and lots of ppl were dancing tell me to it. if you dont like it, LIVE WITH IT, you dont have to make sure everyone knows it. i mean, whether they are good or not, they tried their best, and now lots of ppl like that dance?
I don’t know why you do this. It’s ridiculous. Maybe there are americans out there who think “oh, KOREA doesnt matter, but how come THEY have Wondergirls that are sooo famous?” and so u make a forum to try and make sure other countries are better than my hometown. I’m not a fan of them or anything, I’m a korean and i listen to that song. SO what’s going to happen when ten MILLION people say they dont like it? So what if they are young? and WHAT IF THEIR DANCE MOVES JUST DONT HAPPEN TO BE PERFECT? Why do you guys always want to defame people or things that have tried and worked up their talent to make something out of it? WHy dont YOU Guys try making a dance and get it all over YouTube and Google searches? Just STOP okay? It may not be the dance they have in other countries, but us koreans think this is offensive. I’ve lived in America for god knows how long and i can read exactly what you mean. It doesnt matter WHAT you are critisizing. I mean come on, “the ‘tell me’ Wave” is Stupid? That is really immature. I could tell you guys are jealous. See what you wrote :
“But now, we have a Wonder Girls dance “wave”? Nooo. Not another “wave.” And for what? What is THAT? Just because I don’t like KFC, I dont make a WHOLE FRIGGIN FORUM SAYING I DONT LIKE KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I take it to myself. So, I dont know why you do this. YOu guys should just grow up okay?
whether you like it or not, you dont have to offend others by making Korea sound bad. We’d had enough of that over the years. We don’t critisize American or other countries for the little flaws they have. SO JUST GROW UP!!!! Ugh… you guys act like little kids….
I don’t think anybody here is trying to say anything bad about Korea. Heck, most people here aren’t even complaining about the dance itself. The popularity of the dance is one thing, and bizarre as it seems to some of us, it’s spread is explicable: despite looking complicated, the moves themselves are really easy. There’s just a LOT of them, but if you can memorize the steps they’re not so hard to do. That brings us to the complaint about the Wonder Girls ~ since the dance is basically pretty easy, it’s annoying for some people that the group that originated it is pretty darn bad at it. They’ve gotten better, but when people can get their computer avatars to do it better than the Wonder Girl’s first performance, you have to wonder about how much talent they actually have. That’s the real point. Korea produces lots of really talented singers and dancers, so the the Wonder Girl’s popularity makes some people . . .well, it makes us wonder.
The other thing that gets lots of people is the age of some of the girls. I personally think it’s more than a bit creepy to sexualize girls who aren’t yet the age of consent. So do lots of people, both non-natives and natives alike. It’s not about “making Korea sound bad” The Wonder Girls don’t make anything sound bad (except maybe themselves) no matter how much people criticize them. But neither does criticizing them. I happen to despise SMAP and their tyrrany of Japanese pop culture, but I’ve never had any of my Japanese friends take it to mean I hate Japan even though it’s overrun with SMAP-loving fiends. Nor do my Canadian chingu accuse me of hating Canada when I make fun of Celine Dion’s ovewrought “My Heart Will Go On” (and on, and on, and oooooooooooon! make it stop!) Likewise, griping about the “Tell Me Wave” is just that: griping about yet another “wave”, this time spawned by girls without much talent and with some rather sleezy appeal among the not-quite-the-target-audience.
So if you like them, go find a forum and talk about how much you like them. But if you want to talk about them with people who don’t like them, let’s not start by accusing them of being childish and possibly racist, please?
In the meantime, however, I remain deeply envious of Big Mamma. I wish I could sing like that . . .or at least sometimes borrow her tailor.
Maybe…but that song is so CATCHY … i sing it like a week TT___TT
Tell me tell me t-t-t-t-tell me u_______u
I, too, have been infected by “Tell Me” disease. It no longer bothers me. I—I—kind of—like the dance.
Nooooooooo!
Help me!
Help me. H-h-h-h-h-help me.
Nooooooo!
keep it short and simple. they’re cute. yeah… yeah…. but come on. you should be tired watching “tell me” on youtube. right?
yes, they have no talent. although compared to the others, yeun and sunye are better. only when compared to their bandmates though.
i dont mind that the dance is super simple and that they’re not very good- i enjoy a trend or two once n a while. i agree, this one was way overdone, but it was fun when it was just catching on.
LOL @ HannahMont2. This is a blog. The author can express his opinion, on any topic, in any way he wants. If you can’t cope with the fact that someone has a different opinion than you, I suggest disconnecting your internet service and living in a cave. Your other option would be to grow up because, quite frankly, your passionate display of affection for the Wonder Girls is a little creepy.
wow, some harsh comments there.
totally agree with what ^ tristan said though, this is a blog, the author is allowed to expressed his opinions/ thoughts freely. anyone can comment but hey, don’t be harsh/ irrational.
tell me– WG, they don’t seem very talented but i can c y they’re so popular though. it’s the music n the song! very catchy.
This remind me of Linkin Park’s case, where many Rock fans criticize LP for their music. They said that LP’s music are not good enough and things like that.
So what ? In the end, many still like LP, and the fact that they are one of the most well-known rock band (or ‘whatsoever band’ that you want to call ‘em) ever, not just within the “Rock community”. Part of it was because their music was easy to listen and their lyrics were something that you can easy understand.
So, take it easy, guys. We are not talking about can the WG sing or dance or not. They CAN sing and dance, to some extent, alright ?
Of course there are other controversy, like their underage state, unsuitable sexy dancing…. and so on. But I won’t talk about it. Since all over the world, there are teenager pregnancy, students related to drugs, shooting, smoking… In American films, for examples, these scenes are quite popular and who say that the teenagers won’t be affected by it ?
It’s the adults who brought the youngsters to these are to blame, not the youngsters themselves. They might don’t even understand what are they doing.
So it’s the adults who need to take responsibility. They can act, they can educate their child, they can prevent others from polluting the children’s mind, … . They should do something rather than just complain about it.
You shouldn’t say they don’t have talent only based on Tell Me. Of course you can dance like that, and that’s the point. Because everyone can do it, more people will get into the “wave”. But they CAN dance AND sing, Tell Me just don’t do their justice. When singing ballads only So Hee can’t really sing, when dancing to Irony and This Fool they can show a bit of their moves.
But then, it’s JYP that don’t give them a song where they show their potential. How can you sing properly on Tell Me and So Hot? You can’t use vibrato or anything else on songs like that, so judging WG on these songs are totally pointless.
I didn’t really like them either when I heard Tell Me, but damn, that’s one catchy song! And once I’ve heard and seen their perf of other songs, I loved them. Of course they’re not BoA or DBSK or even Hyori, but they only have 1 professional year behind them, there’s still room for improvements.
About underage statement, you should check out for Sweaty, that group is made of kids under 12.
Well, perhaps I was a bit harsh. I just don’t like the present state of K-Pop, because I see all these megagroups and very little relative talent. I long for the days when talent meant for something, not just 35 singers in an army formation. The 90’s were rougher around the edges, but in a way, much more fun.
Wow —
dude! stop being a hater!
um.. i love tell me ! lol…you should check more of their songs recently. All of the members shows alot of improvement. especially So hee. Their dancing is awesome, in tell me, so hot and nobody!. I thinkTheses girls have talents and a lot of charisma. i love their personalities!.especially sunmi lol!!.. If you get to know them more, than you can judge them if they can’t dance, sing, or have talents or not. at first for me when i saw their irony performance back in the day i hated them lol..i was thinking wat kind of music is this?? that was my first korean music experience. then when i get to hear and see more of wonder girls, i fall in love with them. lol…Oh and one more thing i have to add. This girls works so hard to be where they are today. And how do i know?? cuz i saw their interview on Star Show and many other interviews. I guess the girls will improves since they are still young, they go to school and they have to work everyday performing on stage especially for Sohee and Sunmi since they are still in freshman year in high school, It’s really tiring. So i guess before you make judgement of others you should give people the benefit of a doubt or chances. Im sure you don’t like being judge neither. And one more thing: in their new album NObody one of the member which is Ye Eun compose the song Saying i love you. Such a sweet songs.
Just wanna say Yoo Seung Jun was the best back in the day.
hehehe
Oh god, I just youtubed and just realized how funny he was hehehe
Time to check out S.E.S.
All I got to say is that if I can’t see these girls distinguish themselves individually, if I can’t see them as a solo artist…I think future is bleak. Look at Big Bang, I know YG, but just walk with me. Each member in BB can be seen as a solo artist, distinguishable and with unique abilities. These guys have the power to make one feel excited to see what they are going to bring forth as a group and a solo artist. Whereas WG, oh dear me, I can’t feel any creative vibe from them.
well, maybe their purpose for dancing SIMPLE steps is for everyone to learn it so that it can be a trend..it’s a TECHNIQUE to get many fans,to be POPULAR..i don’t think it’s wrong, they’re just USING their minds..and it’s obvious, like COMMON SENSE!
Hello guys. I’m Mexican and the same way that the other people, I knew to Wonder Girs and their Wave. What is the reason? they are SO SO popular. In Mexico speak spanish, the people dont understand the korean or english language, is a poor country, the internet yet has many difficults, BUT We Know to Wonder Girls and a little of the korean culture.
Conclusion: The Wonder Girls are amazing.
Thanks for readme.
The only thing I can say about them is: they provide entertainment, that’s all. I’m not a fan or a hater of WG but personally, I just think they are overrated. I’ve seen posts elsewhere where people are told off (in a rather rude way) just because they complained of the WG’s abilities and quality. Let’s all face it. WG is a ‘product’ and their company has ‘marketed’ them successfully. Just like how not everyone likes Coke, but they still dominate the market. It’s only a matter of time before another all-girls idol group will pop out and overtake the market share. Just view WG from a commercial perspective and you will instead, admire the marketing strategies their company employ. At least, this should deflect the utter dislike you have for them in a rather positive way.
In a way, I agree, because I admire JYP and his ability to market trends. Obviously, he is aware that they have no real raw talent, which I realized at some point, is part of their charm, in the same way that Sohee’s inability to hold a note and her Lolita-esque appearance makes her very cute and cuddly to older men. Eww, but true. The ease of the Tell Me dance and the “cute sexy” of the whole thing are things that hit a very particularly Korean bullseye. Which is why I doubt they’ll ever succeed in the States, except as a niche group for teens; I don’t think their sexiness carries over to the US pop market, on top of there not being such a desire for obviously young women — Britney Spears there was, but her sexiness was always tongue-in-cheek, and a factor always acknowledged to be IN PLAY, from the controversial “Hit Me” first video set in naughty schoolgirl outfits, her culture-shocking red outfit in her next big hit, and then her overt crossover into outright outrageous sexiness, which actually in itself didn’t really work, since it confused her teen demographic.
The US is a pop music culture, however, that is generally far more used to “mature” themes and performers, from Destiny’s Child/Beyonce to oversexed R&B acts, to the extreme sexualities/identities of Madonna and the like. I can’t see WG entering that arena based on sex appeal, and while cuteness goes a long way in East Asia, it won’t take you that far as a pop act in the US. So, stripped of either “sexy” or “cute”, you are left with talent, which the WG simply don’t have. And most Americans aren’t going to see them as the cute little “dongsaeng” in the way Koreans do. And hence, after a bit of niche success right after their initial push, the WG will fade from the American pop landscape quicker than the value of Rain tix in LA can drop to near zero.
I do see the genius of their marketing — I just wish the Korean pop music market wasn’t becoming quite nearly the realm of teenagers for the sake of quick bucks. Even ten years ago, you had more variety out there at the top levels, with more actual ADULTS or different genres of music dominating the top twenty. And even amongst your big teeny-type groups, they were quite obviously far more talented and fun, and at least hopped around more, as opposed to shaking ass in fetish costume. Give me an Lee Sora or H.O.T or Cool or Kim Gun Mo or even a bubblegum pop Two Two or UP ferchrissakes. And JYP was also in effect during the mid-90’s.
Unfortunately, I think it’s more than just me getting old. I simply think that the quest for quick bucks by essentially turning to high-class doumi for music has erased the variety and sheer amount of talent that used to be out there. Korean pop used to be fun quirky, and sometimes great, sometimes embarrassing. Now, it’s just become blah and kinda continuously embarrassing, at least to me.
