멀티매거진 for your fashion fetish…
OK, let's talk straight for a minute. And because I'm not Korean, I might have some objectivity on this. I do like Korean popular culture, and know something about it, otherwise I wouldn't be part of this magazine, but I do have an outside perspective that allows me to not get sucked up into trends and "waves" less easily.
So, I'm just gonna say it: the Wonder Girls have no talent. None. Oh, come on. Don't get mad. Just think about it objectively for a minute. They can't sing AT ALL and they can't dance to SAVE THEIR LIVES. Do you remember their first live performance of "Tell Me"? It was terrible. Horrible. I'm scarred for life. On my eyes. And not using Michael Jackson or someone as the standard, because Korea has enough good dancers to compare with, from all the way back to Seo Taiji and the Boys to Boa and Lee Hyori. They can at least perform decent dances. But what is all this "shaky shoulder dance" crap? So they wiggle suggestively in sync? Whoa – what a concept. *I* can do that, and I'm in my mid-thirties with a gut. I just have to channel my old Kid-n-Play/MC Hammer moves made in front of the TV, but if you give me a few minutes and the motivation, I CAN do the Wonder Girls dance. And what's with them being 14 Western age? That's just pervy, dude, since the two 14-year-olds LOOK 14. We're not talking Britney at 17 with the tongue-in-cheek schoolgirl video – we're talking Jodi Foster in Taxi Driver with the disturbingly bad makeup job. Eww.
But now, we have a Wonder Girls dance "wave"? Nooo. Not another "wave." And for what? Some rejects from an audition for the Doosan cheerleaders now working as street dancers opening a Paris Baguette could do the "Tell Me" dance better than the Wonder Girls. Has Korean pop culture really gotten so bad? There isn't anyone more talented who can be on stage during prime time? This is it?
And what's more, now we have announcers on variety shows following along to the dance for fun and showing up IN THE NEWS for doing it. Why? Let it die.
The real problem is that the flavor-ful JYP, who created this dance and the Wonder Girls, has that dance performed by said Wonder Girls, who are flavor-less and haven't even finished puberty yet. I'm supposed to care about them shaking their ass around? Check out the originator doing it, who is getting on to his 40's and was in his prime in the 90's. And he's a dude. Yet, he still pulls it off better than these "Wonder Girls", who are anything BUT a wonder:
여기는 비의 뉴욕의 공연할 때 비의 쉬는 사간에 짬깐 나온 JYP의 모습. 그리고 JYP는 아저씨잖아.
Here, you get a sampling of JYP's best moves, as performed when Rain was resting in between shows, and which JYP was probably just doing as practice to keep in the game. Now, THIS is someone who can dance:
밑이는 JYP아닌데 그의 춤을 추는 거야. 잘. 일반인인데.
Below, even though it's not JYP, it's his dance, and you can see how it stands on its own, as performed by someone with some skill:
내가 하고 싶은 말이 뭐냐고? 쉽게 말해줄께. 원더걸스는 춤을 못춘다. 그리고 그 춤같이 않은 춤을 똑같이 출려고 하는 사람들이 좀 옷긴 단 말이야. JYP는 그 춤을 만들었는데 JYP의 기준으로 봐야 되는 거아니야? 그리고 한국에서는 노래 적당하게 잘할 수 있고 춤을 출 줄 아는 여자들이 없나? 휴. 안탑깝다.
So, my point? I'll make it simple. The Wonder Girls can't dance. And watching people who can't even perform the dance that even the original stars can't dance right to doesn't do anything for me. And before you say I'm too harsh on the Wonder Girls, let me just say that since JYP made both the dance and THEM, he's the logical standard of comparison. The way it should be, is the girls should have made the dance sexy and their own, while JYP remains funny and charming doing it for fun sometimes on stage. As it is, he's much better than his protegées, who are about as sexy as the middle school girls I see in uniforms walking down the street every day. Eww.

I don't feel so alone with my dislike of the Wonder Girls anymore…
It's a painful experience watching them. One of them in particular, So Hee, is much less talented than the others and I don't understand how people could devote their attention to someone who can't sing nor dance just because they're "cute". It's scary how old these girls are, most of them still in high school and doing sexy dances (like the routine to Irony). Uh, Lolita, anyone?
Now this Song is really stupid. But the most the terrible thing is that any song of that kind seems to have that catchy melody/hookline. Still back in Germany (I left about one week ago) I'm being hauted by that song uarghh.
But thanks anyway for bringing me back (although not the best) memories of my recent Korea trip
FMS rocks, btw
Talent matters not…it's the thought that counts.
Yah.. you might give props to JYP, but he did create the Wonder Girls. And he's probably hoping for an SES/Finkl length career from these girls. It's all about the money, and beyond being a great entertainer, JYP is a savvy businessman.
Is it wrong that I agree that the girls are too young, can't sing or dance and I'm still totally fascinated by them anyways? It's more the potential, okay, fine, it's cos I like JYP's songwriting and production, I just sort of tolerate them. I see the girls as being more cyphers than anything else. And the Korean entertainment industry (or Korea generally) rarely seems to award talent so much as effort. 수고하시면 능력은 필요 없다 (unfortunamente)~ And so many of these idol groups are about image and entertaining generally versus performing as musicians.
My fave girl group is actually British though–Girls Aloud. They are the BEST. Way better than the Spice Girls, but Girls Aloud has the power of Xenomania on their side
I don't think its wrong. It just means that you might be one of those people who linger or slow down when arriving upon an accident. I don't care for them either, but as a friend of mine said, "American gave us New Kids on the Block! You not throw stone." He's right. I would be hard pressed to come up with a winner between WG and NKOTB.
Well… I do agree with the 'fact' they cannot sing… But! I like 'them'! Totally reversing the recent trend, Wondergirl actually created new 'boom' or was it JYP? I do not care if people call it stupid… The song is easy and have a power to make people 'addicted' to it! And it's fun to watch and do what they do!!
i do like that little move they make but i feel sorry for them at the same time. i gues they have fame now but are they really doing what they want to do? or doing what they are told to do?
it is addictive as SparQeen said and fun to watch also.
okay… i think you guys dont have to make a forum for this.. grow up! okay? if you dont like it, just live with it. anyways, what are you t rying to do with this forum?? get as many comments so you can sue them or what?
YOU GUYS, just because they cant dance well or not, i think you guys are jealous. i think you guys think they are getting all that attention for "nothing" and you think you can do better yet you are not famous. Yesterday i watched this TV show (in korea) and lots of ppl were dancing tell me to it. if you dont like it, LIVE WITH IT, you dont have to make sure everyone knows it. i mean, whether they are good or not, they tried their best, and now lots of ppl like that dance?
I don't know why you do this. It's ridiculous. Maybe there are americans out there who think "oh, KOREA doesnt matter, but how come THEY have Wondergirls that are sooo famous?" and so u make a forum to try and make sure other countries are better than my hometown. I'm not a fan of them or anything, I'm a korean and i listen to that song. SO what's going to happen when ten MILLION people say they dont like it? So what if they are young? and WHAT IF THEIR DANCE MOVES JUST DONT HAPPEN TO BE PERFECT? Why do you guys always want to defame people or things that have tried and worked up their talent to make something out of it? WHy dont YOU Guys try making a dance and get it all over YouTube and Google searches? Just STOP okay? It may not be the dance they have in other countries, but us koreans think this is offensive. I've lived in America for god knows how long and i can read exactly what you mean. It doesnt matter WHAT you are critisizing. I mean come on, "the 'tell me' Wave" is Stupid? That is really immature. I could tell you guys are jealous. See what you wrote :

What is THAT? Just because I don't like KFC, I dont make a WHOLE FRIGGIN FORUM SAYING I DONT LIKE KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I take it to myself. So, I dont know why you do this. YOu guys should just grow up okay?
whether you like it or not, you dont have to offend others by making Korea sound bad. We'd had enough of that over the years. We don't critisize American or other countries for the little flaws they have. SO JUST GROW UP!!!! Ugh… you guys act like little kids….
I don't think anybody here is trying to say anything bad about Korea. Heck, most people here aren't even complaining about the dance itself. The popularity of the dance is one thing, and bizarre as it seems to some of us, it's spread is explicable: despite looking complicated, the moves themselves are really easy. There's just a LOT of them, but if you can memorize the steps they're not so hard to do. That brings us to the complaint about the Wonder Girls ~ since the dance is basically pretty easy, it's annoying for some people that the group that originated it is pretty darn bad at it. They've gotten better, but when people can get their computer avatars to do it better than the Wonder Girl's first performance, you have to wonder about how much talent they actually have. That's the real point. Korea produces lots of really talented singers and dancers, so the the Wonder Girl's popularity makes some people . . .well, it makes us wonder.
The other thing that gets lots of people is the age of some of the girls. I personally think it's more than a bit creepy to sexualize girls who aren't yet the age of consent. So do lots of people, both non-natives and natives alike. It's not about "making Korea sound bad" The Wonder Girls don't make anything sound bad (except maybe themselves) no matter how much people criticize them. But neither does criticizing them. I happen to despise SMAP and their tyrrany of Japanese pop culture, but I've never had any of my Japanese friends take it to mean I hate Japan even though it's overrun with SMAP-loving fiends. Nor do my Canadian chingu accuse me of hating Canada when I make fun of Celine Dion's ovewrought "My Heart Will Go On" (and on, and on, and oooooooooooon! make it stop!) Likewise, griping about the "Tell Me Wave" is just that: griping about yet another "wave", this time spawned by girls without much talent and with some rather sleezy appeal among the not-quite-the-target-audience.
So if you like them, go find a forum and talk about how much you like them. But if you want to talk about them with people who don't like them, let's not start by accusing them of being childish and possibly racist, please?
In the meantime, however, I remain deeply envious of Big Mamma. I wish I could sing like that . . .or at least sometimes borrow her tailor.
Maybe…but that song is so CATCHY … i sing it like a week TT___TT
Tell me tell me t-t-t-t-tell me u_______u
I, too, have been infected by "Tell Me" disease. It no longer bothers me. I—I—kind of—like the dance.
Nooooooooo!
Help me!
Help me. H-h-h-h-h-help me.
Nooooooo!
