Uh-oh – looks like some controversy has been brewing, but in an interesting way:

방영 전부터 화제를 모았던 된장녀 드라마 ‘악녀일기’가 지난 26일 첫 전파를 탄 후 시끌시끌 논란이 끊이질 않고 있다.

신용카드값 800만원을 쓰는 휴학생 이칸희와 남자를 시도 때도 없이 갈아치우는 미모의 20대 카사노바 안민애 등 쇼킹한 두 악녀들의 이야기는 방송 1회만에 화제를 낳았다.

그러나 ‘악녀일기’속 두 주인공은 연기자가 아닌 실제 자신들의 경험을 ‘본인재연’형식으로 내세운 리얼 드라마이기 때문에 더욱 논란이 되고 있다.

제작사 델미디어의 한 관계자는 “어느 정도 각색은 있지만 두 여주인공이 재연 형식으로 자신들이 겪은 이야기를 연기하고 있다”며 “오히려 두 주인공의 실제의 경험담이 너무 독해서 방송으로 풀어내기에 적지 않은 어려움이 있다”고 밝혔다. [원기사를 읽으세요!]

What the controversy’s all about it not so much the show itself, but the social conversation that’s been going on about the “bean paste stew girl”, which is a literal translation of the Korean term ‘된장녀.’ The idea is that there are certain women who would rather spend 3,000 won (a bit less than $3 American dollars) on a cheap cafeteria meal of bean paste stew all month long, living pretty minimally and frugally at home, and otherwise saving her money, but then buying an $800 Louis Vuitton purse.

What’s interesting in this image is the fact that the woman isn’t jobless or mooching off of others usually, but rather the criticism seems to lie in her apparently warped priorities, her vanity, her lack of a clear idea of what’s “really important.” Even the term itself is a point of controversy, as many women think of it as extremely sexist that such a word is being used as a kind of social disciplining, pointing at certain behavior or certain girls as “bad.”

On the one hand, you have a woman making money, enjoying sexual freedom, being finicky about her dating partners, buying her own stuff. It’s Destiny Child’s “Independent Woman” all rolled up in a term. On the other, however, is an image that seems to frighten many men here, especially in a society that has always kept women tied to very strict and limited social roles, and sexual freedom, unapologetic consumerism, and being a woman who doesn’t have to depend on a man is a scary prospect in Korea. 진짜 재밌네요. 한국에서는 이런바 ‘된장녀‘자체는 문제 아니라 이 개념이 존재할 수 있는 가능성은 재밌죠. 오랫동안에 여성들이 사실 한국에서 아주 엄격한 사회적 역할의 규칙들을 지켜야 했는데 이젠 경제적인 독립 때문에 더이상 남자를 꼭 필요하는 것도아니고 자기 돈을 벌고 있고 더욱더 아마 한국남자들이 싫어하는 건: 성적인 자유를 이젠 즐겁게 느낄 수 있는 가능성이 있는 거예요.

사실 미국의 70/80년대는 비슷했어요. 많은 한국사람들의 생각보다는 미국문화는 아주 보수적인 거예요. 미국처럼 술을 불법하게 만든 나라가 어딨어요, 이슬람교 나라빼고? 그리고 거의 모든 주에서는 그런 역사 때문에 일요일에 술을 못 사고 그리고 지금도 어디서나 새벽 2시이후에 술을 못 팔아요.

근데 70년대부터 미국의 경제가 약해졌고 그리고 인플레이션때문에 전에처럼 여자가 집에서만 있고 남자는 밖에 일하고 – 그 현실이 지난 일이 된 거예요. 결혼하면 꼭 여자도 일해야 되게 됐어요. 50년대는 남편이 버스운전수만으로 돈을 벌어도 가족을 지원할 수 있었는데 80년때는 그렇지 않았어요. 어쩔 수 없이 여자의 사회적 역할도 변해지는 거예요. 그래서 미국에서도 70/80년대는 ‘섹스혁명’, 이혼, 혼자 애를 키우는 어머니, 등등 이슈 된 거예요. 그리고 여성패션에서도 이 경향을 보일 수 있었어요. 왜 여성의류에서는 어깨가 남자처럼 커진 건가요? 그러니까. 그리고 출근하면서 자기 펌프를 벗고 운동화 신는 이미지는 바로 그 거였어요. 여성들의 역할이 혼란스러워지니까. 한국은 그런 과정 중인 거예요. 미국의 Dynasty와 Dallas이란 드라마는 이런 무섭고 파워플한 여자들을 보여준 거고 그리고 처음으로 어깨 큰 패션을 막 일반화를 시킨 거고요.

달IMF 한국은 그렇게 달라요? 더 웃기는 건 IMF 시대 바로 끝났고 80년대의 패션 은 다시 유행 된 것. ㅋㅋ

All this ado about women’s roles in society aren’t that surprising, though. Take the US, for instance. America is a pretty conservative society – what other countries in the world besides conservative Islamic theocracies have banned it completely? – and gender roles until the 1970’s were pretty conservative. If you ask my old sociology professor from college, it wasn’t until the economy shrank and inflation made being a single-earner household for most families impossible that women started heading into the workplace en masse, and the changes in their social roles happened as economic power added to women’s set of social options: divorce, marrying later, being finicky about partners, not being absolutely dependent on a man, etc.

That’s about when shoulder pads started getting bigger, and you have the ubiquitous image of the “working girl” who commutes to work in her Reeboks but then changes into her power bitch heels. You had Dynasty and Dallas to show us all the power that women could wield, in the scariest possible ways, and even a princess (Diana) was wearing power suits, while Margaret Thatcher was showing the western world that women can indeed run shit.

And we had controversy. Sound familiar?
