Why do some women only paint the big toe? I never saw this trend until I came to Korea, so I asked around. Here are some of the answers:
The big toe is big.
You don’t really see the toes.
It’s an older style.
It’s better than nothing.
Walking around Hyehwa this past weekend I saw lots of one toe examples - on young women.
Many used bright colors or even neon polish, and they wore shoes that showed all of their toes… and that only brought MORE attention to their ONE toe. I still don’t quite understand this trend, so feel free to add your suggestions as to why women do this in the comments.

You are seeing this on younger and younger women. One Korean friend of mine says, “Younger students feel uncomfortable doing more than one if they’re not used it.” I guess the big toe’s easy, as opposed to the other ones.
I’ve noticed this over the last 5 years. It’s not a new trend. I would always ask and no one really knew. People gave me reasons from “we don’t paint all the toes because they nails are too small and it’s hard to paint the small toe.” To explanations like, “if a woman has all her toenails painted she is too showy and not modest.” To “having all your toenails painted means that a woman is easy.”
Anyway, 5 years ago, you’d never see women with all their toes painted. Thw whole toenail and manicure thing started to happened over the last 3 years or so. I call it the Sex in the City effect. Once that show hit Kroean TV, it seemed women, especially in Seoul and other big cities started to paint all their toenails. Anwyay, that’s my observation.
